To think Virgina Wade should say 'Oi! Do you mind?'

Firstly, huge congratulations to Andy Murray!

But if I was Virginia Wade I'd be mightily hacked off at all this 'first British winner of Wimbledon in 77 years' malarkey. Come on Sue!

How insulting to Virginia.

(I realise Virginia has most likely never said 'Oi!' to anyone)

Agree (they did quantify it earlier by saying the first British player to have won wearing SHORTS !!)

Think they were comparing him to Fred Perry - who wore long trousers when he won; nothing to do with the fact that he's NOT the first British winner etc.... Hmm. Oh and I'd rather Virginia let us do the speaking - her voice has the same effect on me as fingernails down a blackboard... Grin

YANBU - it's so fucking sexist, like a woman winning is worth about a tenth of a MAN winning.

And it was really difficult explaining it to my DS 'no he isn't the first British winner since 1936, he's the first man to have won'

'so why are they saying he's the first?'

'because bbc radio 4 is populated by old sexist men' is probably the right answer

Yes - there is definitely that underlying sense that it is only the men's championship that really 'counts' , and that the women's contest is somehow secondary and comparatively inconsequential.

Agreed. DH has already had a rant this afternoon about the women's final taking place a whole day before the men's, suggesting it's just an opening act for the main event.

For goodness sake - it is obvious they are referring to the Men's Singles Event - and Virginia's win was also a long time ago....there will be equal delight the next time a Brit wins the Ladies Singles, you can be sure of that.

This kind of whingey thread just gives feminisim a bad name tbh.

I have heard several commentators and it has been very clear that they are talking about the Men's Singles. I don't see any reason for frothing about it either, ukatlast.
There are good reasons to think it is all a bit sexist - timing, relative prize money etc., but this isn't one of them!

Laura Robson has won the juniors, and Jamie Murray has won the mixed doubles so there have been even more recent winners than the ones previously mentioned.

However it WAS said in the context of mens singles.

Ann Jones won the women's singles a few years before Virginia Wade. Yes, there have been some mixed doubles titles since. I think it was quite clear in the context of the commentary that it was the men's title being referred to.

I don't happen to think Virginia Wade's achievement can be ranked alongside Murray's, FWIW.
