.... A game keeper as well, on 30 mph speed limit on a country road.

Drove into back of my best friend when she was on her horse, horse had to be put down & she's in theatre with a broken back.

He was beautiful, he was her world, I loved him.

I'm so sorry about both your friend and her horse. I hope that you receive some good news about your friend soon xxx

How horrific! I am so sorry for your friend and her poor horse. I hope she at least makes a full recovery.

I've given up hacking on roads after too many near misses. I've had my foot hit in the stirrup twice by drivers going past soooo close!

I hope your friend recovers. Poor horse.

oh love. wishing your friend the strength to recover, the drs the skill to help, and you to support your friend.

what a waste due to stupidity.

Oh how awful. I came round a country corner yesterday and saw horses up ahead, also in a 30mph limit. So I slowed down, put my music off (car window was open) and crawled past and kept crawling till well clear. It's not difficult to do.

I am so very sorry.

PLEASE all of you who ride, please be careful, I mean I know there is nothing you can do to prevent stupidity such as on the part of this driver, but still, I worry so much about people on horses on twisty roads.

The thing is as a motorcyclist I know plenty of people who ride like tits on country roads, assuming nothing is going to be there round the corner.
I always find those roads terrifying even in the car. NEVER go faster than the speed you'll be able to stop at if something is RIGHT there.

So probably better to beg the car drivers among us to be careful, n'est-ce pas Sad

how sad, Hacking out on a beautiful day like this too how tragic
people do drive too fast on country lanes but they generally have a speed limiit of 60 which is ridiculous - the law shoul dbe changed

oh my god thats horrific. i hope your friend makes a full recovery. rip horse x

Report
RoooneyMara · 07/07/2013 19:58

I agree Maddy. 60 is ridiculous. These roads are narrower, often have far less visibility and there are more likely to be horses, tractors etc.

Whoever made up the rules is a twit.

So tragic, R.I.P horse and I hope your friend has a speedy recovery.

Has the accident been reported to the BHS? I think they collect such information, though I could be wrong.

I find that the worse drivers around the narrow country lanes are those that know them well. I keep my horse at a big, rural livery yard; all the local farmers and game keepers know it is there and that we have to use the narrow roads, yet most still don't drive sensibly. Often looking surprised when they meet either horse or car.

Of course I'm not saying all farmers and game keepers are the same.

I wish people would slow down and assume that there is something around the bend, the sentences are not long enough. Best wishes to your friend.

My late father ran a company which did horse drawn carriage drives for paying customers. A woman came round a corner too fast with stereo on (so couldn't hear the hooves) and ploughed straight into one of the hdc's. My Dad did everything he could to help the horse survive but six months later (same day as my eldest ds died) he had to have the horse put to sleep. That was one of my Dad's worst days.......... Sad
OP I hope your friend has a speedy recovery.

God thats awful, twat of a driver! It scares me to ride on the roads, i hate it because although i trust the horses i ride there is just not enough focus on horses on the roads in driving lessons and the majority of people round us do slow down it only takes one. so sad about the horse and best wishes for a speedy recovery for your poor friend.

Oh my god that is awful! Your poor friend and her poor horse Sad it's heart breaking! I hope that idiot gets a big kick up the ass from karma!! And loses his license.

Can your friend sue? I know that's not exactly a priority at the moment but it rages me that this arsehole could get away with doing something like this

I'm so sorry for your friend and her horse. I hope she recovers with no lasting (physical) repercussions.

The people who drive like that are utter selfish and arrogant wankers who think they're above the highway code and consideration for others. On any road you should drive as if you don't know what might be round the next corner, but obviously on country roads there are different "hazards" to consider such as horses, tractors, cows sometimes, sheep, often lots of cyclists (because they feel safer there than on urban roads), walkers etc., and they can all be easily obscured by overhanging trees, high hedges, twists and turns. So you bloody well drive with CAUTION ... what's so hard to understand ? Sadly though I've come across a lot of dickheads in my time who seem to think country rounds exist only as their own personal racetracks - they're seen as "challenges" ..... how soon can you get from A to B and so on. This isn't just car drivers but motorcyclists as well who (IME, accept they're not all like that) particularly relish the thrill of the bends.

I really hope the guy concerned pays for this.

Agree, I hope the driver receives a fitting punishment, though that will sadly not bring back your friends lovely horse. How awful.
Sending her vibes that she will recover from her injuries xx
