We sold our house in London at the height of the financial crisis.

We wanted to leave as had new baby and toddler. House was small, worry about schools etc.

Everyone told us that we may never be able to sell if we didn't get out. Housing market was in freefall etc etc

Have just received email to say, 4 years later it sold for £300k more. Up 50%.

Hmm

We were idiots. What were we thinking. We moved up north and our current house as gone up £10k in that time.

I know it's only money, and hindsight is a wonderful thing but it's making me feel sick to think of it.

I feel we fucked up massively.

Please make me feel better

I think that is a bit unfair, Queen. She is just asking for opinion, and it IS kind of annoying. But she will get over it. She isn't responsible for the financial hardship of anyone!!

abbathehorse · 06/07/2013 22:54

Brilliantly put Queen. I don't think this is a personal criticism of the OP, it's just sad that so many of us end up thinking this way about housing.

With house prices increasing relative to wages to such a degree, what legacy are we leaving the next generation?

katykuns · 06/07/2013 22:59

I'm one of those people that can't get out of rented property... I can't even save enough for a decent deposit because jobs/pay is so shit too. I understand the annoyance, but my god what I would give for just an ounce of security. I just want somewhere to being my DC's up without the fear of not being able yo pay the bills or being kicked out Sad

foreverondiet · 06/07/2013 23:10

We did similar - sold 2008 and rented didn't find what we wanted until 2012 and in meantime other half of semi sold for £100k more... That's life - have to look at other non financial aspects eg house was too small, we wanted to leave the area etc.

maddening · 06/07/2013 23:13

we bought a small cottage just before the crisis (mid 2007) and are now in negative equity with no chance of moving - we don't want to live here anymore but are stuck financially.

Asheth · 06/07/2013 23:18

Do you want to sell your currant house? Because if not it doesn't matter how much it's gone up. Who knows how much it might go up by the time you do want to sell.

I bought my house in Sept 07 just before the whole thing crashed down. I lost 30k in a year and we're now back up to just a 10k loss.

I had the option to buy a house in my 20s for 30k, its now got a hundred before that. Que sera sera!
