Ok it all started a few years ago when I had my colours done, was told I was an Autumn, after hiding in black for years and although I was initially v unhappy with the diagnosis, I eventually accepted it and over time changed my clothes and ditched the black.

I now have a fantastic wardrobe of beautiful colours that really suit my colouring and all match. I often get compliments on what I'm wearing and I know it's just cos I'm wearing the right colours for me.

However, it's meant that I have become a bit of a colour fascist! I have 2 friends with similar colouring to me, pale, freckles, blue/ green eyes and reddish tints in their hair and for ages I have been trying to get them to ditch their black and wear warmer colours to the extent that they call me the fashion police and worry about what they are wearing when they are with me ( in a tongue in cheek way, obviously...)

Also when I see women wearing colours that really don't suit them, I have an overwhelming desire to go up to them and tell them ( obviously I don't, as I don't want a mouthful of abuse and its none of my business..)

But it bugs me! Yesterday I saw a woman with dark hair wearing a black and white jacket, a lime green jumper and cerise lipstick. It was just all wrong!! I don't know why it bothers me so much, but it does....What to do??

So none of you have ever made your own fashion mistakes then.... come on, let's hear them..!

Hello I used to wear Addidas Popper trackies back in the day. They were on trend back them. Black with orange stripes!

No mistakes at all!

I wear jeans and vest tops of all different colours. My hair is dyed red.

HoneyDragon · 05/07/2013 16:52

Surely the point of colours is not to embrace fashion?

I don't have fashion mistakes I coordinate myself to match my dog. As every good space cowboy does.

TobyLerone · 05/07/2013 16:54

I'm making a heinous fashion mistake right now.

I'm wearing a maxi dress. I'm only 5'4" and am a bit fat.

Look at how many fucks I give :o

RussiansOnTheSpree · 05/07/2013 16:57

'Find your own uniqueness'. WTAF? From a formula that has been used on countless other mugs idiots people? Do you not know what the word unique means? Hmm

As for covering the hair - yes, that probably isn't an issue for people with brown or mouse or blonde hair. Not so good for us ginges though.

learnasyougo · 05/07/2013 17:11

To OP's defense, I don't think she is advocating banning anyone from wearing the 'wrong' colours (any more than we can tell someone what patterns to wear together - stripes and checks, say) I think she is just saying she can spot these errors, as we might spot when someone is clearly wearing the wrong size clothes. It makes you notice, wish you hadn't, but not able to unsee once seen.

Of course, all you can do is ignore it and remind yourself: she is wearing that shade of pink probably because she LOVES it. End of story. The clothes and colours we wear are not necessarily ALL about how you look to others, or what flatters you in the eye of the beholder (external reasons). Sometimes people wear things they like and love (internal reasons). And why not. Have you never worn something because of how it makes you feel (even if no one compliments you on it?)

EldritchCleavage · 05/07/2013 17:13

Yes. I've got a silk dress that my husband, my sisters and for all I know everyone else who has ever seen it loathes. I love it though, so I still wear it.

curlew · 05/07/2013 17:14

Loving "find your own uniqueness!

Presumably my uniqueness is the same as all the other Irish looking people with red hair, grey eyes and pale skin that goes red at the slightest provocation?

curlew · 05/07/2013 17:16

And sometimes I wear colours specifically because red heads spend a lot of time hearing people say "oh,you can't wear red/pink/yellow/"

Oh can't I? Watch me.........

RussiansOnTheSpree · 05/07/2013 17:25

curlew Stop trying to steal my uniqueness! Angry Although my eyes are greeny grey not grey. So obviously that will mean I have to wear magenta corsets with floaty bits or something like that. Even though nobody can ever see my eyes because I wear glasses with quite thick lenses.

RussiansOnTheSpree · 05/07/2013 17:26

curlew You can't wear yellow if you don't like insects mobbing you. But I don't think that's got anything to do with hair colour tries to repress memories of one particularly greenfly summer in the 70s

TobyLerone · 05/07/2013 17:28

Curlew and Russian, you are both trying to steal my uniqueness. Except my eyes are greeny-blue.

What happens when people who tan go on holiday? Do they have to get their colours done again?

curlew · 05/07/2013 17:34
GertrudeMorel · 05/07/2013 17:39

But I hate green, yellow, orange, blue, pink and red.

If I was told they were 'my' colours in any shade, there's no way I'd wear them.

Scarletohello · 05/07/2013 17:49

Gertrude. Bloody hell! So what colours do u wear then...?

OP posts:
GertrudeMorel · 05/07/2013 17:57

I wear black, grey, white and beiges. I have on white jeans today and a grey and white t-shirt.

I have dark hair and dark eyes and mid toned skin. It might be all wrong, but I simply can't abide brighter hues or strong colours on me. I have just remembered that I have a navy sun dress though!

I had to wear dark green as a bridesmaid not long ago. Gruesome.

ScarletLady02 · 05/07/2013 17:59

Thanks for answering DarkWinter - I have no clue about it at all. I'm totally happy with my style though...

Mostly I'm waiting for the zombie apocalypse so can drive around in a tank and look like Tank Girl.

ScarletLady02 · 05/07/2013 18:00

Me and DH do laugh when we look at our washing hanging up. His is ALL blue and grey and mine is ALL black and charcoal Grin

JohnSnowsTie · 05/07/2013 18:17

I used to have a friend who was totally preoccupied with what everyone else wore. I'd see her looking them up and down and she always had something disparaging to say. She was a colleague and other colleagues noticed it and she made everyone feel uncomfortable.

The problem is, when you openly scrutinise people like this it opens you up to judgement from others yourself. So make sure you always get it spot on, or they'll be gossiping about your own stylistic faux pas!

MrsCampbellBlack · 05/07/2013 18:18

Loads of people seem to get their colours done now - you only have to read S&B to see that.

Its not for me, to be honest, I think its a tad exploitative of women. And yes it does have Bridget Jones connotations.

But if someone wants to spend £100 to be told what colours to wear, well its up to them.

Not sure there was any need for the mean comments about the OP's size though.

I love clothes but would never offer an opinion on someone else's outfit unless invited to do so. Well I'd compliment them but would never criticise.

LillethTheCat · 05/07/2013 19:19

Ok Toby I will wear what the chuff I like Grin

Thanks for that point about needing pictures with us wearing everything dark. It was a nice idea to get our colours done for free though.

I wear mainly blue's, greys, whites and blacks. I have no idea if I look good or not.

RedToothBrush · 05/07/2013 19:33

Quirky people use clothes as an extension to their personally. Following rules, means you can not do this. Clothes are not a uniform (unless of course they actually are!). You should not confirm if you do not wish to.

So you can cringe all you like. I, however, will judge you back as being rather narrow minded and far too obsessed with what other people think of you rather than being brave and confident to just wear what you like and what you feel comfortable in.

BridgetBidet · 05/07/2013 19:38

Isn't getting your colours done whisper, terribly lower middle class?

BridgetBidet · 05/07/2013 19:39

Like avocado bath sets, artex and driving a Ford?

libertine73 · 05/07/2013 20:17

Yeah if you say so Bridget couldn't give a fuck TBH
