About DS' class watching DVD at school

DS's class teacher was helping to organise a whole-school event, so the class were left watching a DVD with a TA. For what length of time would you judge this to be acceptable? I'm not sure if I'm overreacting.

You're over reacting just by starting a thread about it.

It's nearly the end of term and the children were all fine watching a dvd with supervision.

Schools and teachers are very busy in the last few weeks of term.

noblegiraffe · 04/07/2013 09:54

Watching a whole film DVD would be ok at this time of year I reckon, although if they are young and fidgety I'd expect other activities on offer so they could opt out if they wanted.

sashh · 04/07/2013 09:56

Id depends, if it was an 18 cert film and the class is in reception then any length of time.

ShatnersBassoon · 04/07/2013 09:56

You're overreacting. It's a film.

Fakebook · 04/07/2013 09:57

You're overreacting.

meditrina · 04/07/2013 09:57

What was the film?

cornflakegirl · 04/07/2013 09:57

It's only the beginning of July! There are three more weeks of term - I'm not writing off all learning for that length of time - or if I should, then I'm doing cheaper term time holidays from now on!

One 1.5 normal kids film fine., if it only happens occasionally for good reason.

We used to get one for teachers to finish reports.

More than that in one day or several days no.

viewwitharoom · 04/07/2013 09:57

OK, was the dvd unsuitable? Are you unhappy about the teacher not being there? Does this happen a lot or was it a one off end of term thing? Based on your info I would say you are over reacting, sorry.

mrsjay · 04/07/2013 09:57

unless it was an cert above their age you are over reacting what would you have liked them to do

Salmotrutta · 04/07/2013 09:57

How old?

If young then maybe they'd get a bit bored but if older I don't see the problem?

Unless it was The Exorcist.

ShatnersBassoon · 04/07/2013 09:58

So they've been watching films all day?

DramaInPyjamas · 04/07/2013 09:58

Unreasonable and over-reacting.

melliebobs · 04/07/2013 09:58

Summer holidays are close aren't they. So surely it's like winding down time. Exams/sats what ever will be done n dusted. I'd have no issues with them watching a DVD

Burmobasher · 04/07/2013 09:58

Wouldn't bother me. I remember it being such a treat to watch tv in school.
The teacher is only absent due to organising an event to benefit the whole school, it's not like they are getting their hair done instead!

cornflakegirl · 04/07/2013 09:59

He's KS2 and it was an age-appropriate film.

OP posts:
Salmotrutta · 04/07/2013 09:59

Plus, if it was just for 90 minutes so that a whole-school thing could be organised to benefit everyone then you are being silly.

SkinnybitchWannabe · 04/07/2013 10:00

I'd say the length of the film is acceptable..turning it off half way through would be unacceptable Wink.
I hate this time of the school year, too many days of doing nothing besides watching dvds and playing games.
My 14 year old son told me that they will be painting plant pots during their last few days wtf!

ShatnersBassoon · 04/07/2013 10:00

I remember the big TV getting wheeled into the hall for the whole school to sit and watch a film towards the end of term. The teacher would always have to get one of the big boys to work the video for them, and it would always be the same film, year in year out and sometimes multiple times in one week. It was great!

mrsjay · 04/07/2013 10:00

He's KS2 and it was an age-appropriate film.

Oh well id not bother I assume he will be taking part in the whole school event, his education will not slip because he got to watch a disney film honestly

noblegiraffe · 04/07/2013 10:01

There are three more weeks to go, but I can't see any suggestion in your posts that they are only going to be watching DVDs from now on. So as a one-off it's fine.

viewwitharoom · 04/07/2013 10:02

Sorry, missed your second post. The 3 weeks til end of term might make me raise an eyebrow, but I would just keep an eye on what else happens between now and end of term. If this is a one off then I would just leave it, if there is more 'babysitting' type stuff going on then I would query what's going on.

YouTheCat · 04/07/2013 10:02

We even have a treat afternoon in our school where the children get to choose from a list of dvds being shown in different classrooms.

It gives the whole school a break and means a lot of organising can get done in that one afternoon.

Salmotrutta · 04/07/2013 10:02

Our schools are off already up here but watching DVDs does happen when there are several activities going on in the last couple of weeks after exams - mind you I'm secondary so things are organised a bit differently.

Ragwort · 04/07/2013 10:03

I used to feel exactly the same way as you OP Grin but to be honest in the grand scheme of things it is not the end of the world, my DS is at secondary school now and has had so many days 'dossing around' (how can a trip to a theme park possibly be 'educational' Hmm?) but I have learned to be far more relaxed about such things now.
