To feel uneasy about drinking this vodka?

I know it's a bit early for an alcohol thread but I just saw the bottle and thought 'Right, I will do a thread about it!'. We bulk buy chicken breasts from the local chicken factory, on Tuesday, DP went to his mates (said mate gets it for us) house to collect the chicken and came home with a bottle of vodka. Lemon or lime flavour apparently. He says it's legit but it's in an old chardonnay bottle with a sticky label over the top of the original label with C/Vodka 11/12 written on it.

I don't know if anyone watches Emmerdale or Hollyoaks but both soaps have had recent storylines about dodgy vodka (mixed with bleach etc) and it's really put me off trying it. I don't know who made it or where it's come from, all I can get off DP is 'X got it off a mate' (X being the bloke that gets the chicken for us).

AIBU to feel uneasy about drinking it?

I wouldn't. I don't watch tv but read too many Take a Breaks with people dying from dodgy vodka.

VivaLeBeaver · 04/07/2013 08:32

I wouldn't. There's lots of garages round here brewing vodka and trading standards are always warning people ofnthe dangers of drinking it.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/07/2013 08:33

I don't think I would drink it!
You can test if its got bleach in it though by dangling a bit of coloured cloth in some, but there are so many other potential additives. And I say that as someone who makes their own odd gin/vodka concoctions.

CoolaSchmoola · 04/07/2013 08:35

Not a chance, but I would clean the loo with it.

adeucalione · 04/07/2013 08:35

Watchdog did a piece recently about dodgy vodka causing all sorts of health problems, including blindness. For the sake of saving a tenner I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.

Trills · 04/07/2013 08:35

If someone says they have distilled their own vodka it could be dangerous.

If they have just flavoured some cheap vodka to make it lemon-flavoured it's very very unlikely to do you any harm.

No reason why there would be bleach in it though.

BabsAndTheRu · 04/07/2013 08:37

Don't, I have treated people who have drank bootleg vodka. One will never leave hospital, so sad. Too many life's destroyed by this.

PoppadomPreach · 04/07/2013 08:37

I wouldn't. If it contained methanol (which I understand can be used in illicit alcohol) it could lead to blindness. And there could be a whole host of other things too.

I know I sound ridiculously alarmist, and there's a 90% chance it's fine, but I just wouldn't risk it.

tmae · 04/07/2013 08:37

I personally wouldn't touch it, but I am very cautious about what I eat and drink as I have OCD so may not be the best person to respond!

There was also a programme on recently where people went undercover into shops and found fake vodka (and other alcohol) so it is a problem, although from what I saw on the documentary they were faked better than the one you describe.

moustachio · 04/07/2013 08:38

Wtaf do people actually do stuff like this. As if you have a mate that gets chicken on the sly. Bizaare.

Wouldn't touch the vodka with a barge pole. Recently went to Poland and the lemon and lime vodka was beautiful though.

Trills · 04/07/2013 08:44

I think you are all getting a bit overly worried.

It is almost certainly not "homemade vodka", but bought vodka that has been flavoured at home.

Like sloe gin. Gin + sloes + sugar. No methanol.

If the friendly farmer who gave you eggs offered you some sloe gin, would you say no?

Maybe just ask exactly what they said it was?

Blu · 04/07/2013 08:48

I would want to know if it is genuinely home-brewed / manufactured, or whether it is cheap vodka that has been doctored with legit ingredients.

I'd want to know about the chicken breasts, too!

Latara · 04/07/2013 08:48

but you can buy Absolut Lemon vodka quite cheaply; or buy cheap vodka and put lemon juice in it.

Don't risk drinking knock off vodka.

maternitart · 04/07/2013 08:51

C/Vodka? Are you sure it's not chicken flavour?

PoppadomPreach · 04/07/2013 08:54

Trills - I (respectfully!) disagree - why would the vodka be in a wine bottle if it was simple shop bought with fruit added for flavour?

Bootleg alcohol is a big business. Of course it could be just fruit flavoured perfectly legal and drinkable vodka, but if there's a chance it is not, and given the issues that could arise as a result of dodgy stuff, I think it's wise not to drink it.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 04/07/2013 09:03

Depends how well you know the mate really and what they are like, if they are the sort of person that makes jam, sloe gin at Christmas, etc etc, then maybe trust it, but if it's just some random bloke your DP's mate knows, as in this case, then I wouldn't trust it.

SisterMatic · 04/07/2013 09:06

I wouldn't drink it, you will worry yourself sick afterwards if you do try it.

halcyondays · 04/07/2013 09:07

I wouldn't, as it's come from somebody you not know.

Jarca · 04/07/2013 09:09

I would not touch it.Vodka is one of the easiest to fake.

And the fake alcohol business got rather out of hands where I live and there were people dying so I'm influenced by that.

dearth · 04/07/2013 09:12

Does the mate steal chicken from the factory and sell it to his friends?

I wouldn't touch the chicken or the most-likely-dodgy vodka.

Trills · 04/07/2013 09:14

Because cheap (Tesco value, Sainsburys basics) vodka comes in a bottle that has a very crap lid and doesn't go back on well.

You put the booze and flavourings into a jar with sugar (lemon rind, try to avoid the pith), leave it for a while, then strain and decant into whatever bottle is convenient.

cozietoesie · 04/07/2013 09:29

Pout it away. Vodka is only cheap if you really want some and it's not worth taking the risk of acquiring tainted supplies. (These days, I only buy liquor from the big stores - I've even given up using the local convenience shops.)

TheCunnyFunt · 04/07/2013 09:44

No the chicken isn't stolen, the chicken factory employees are offered it, 10kg of chicken breasts for £36. DPs mate buys it and we pay him back. My dad used to work there and we used to get chicken like that so it's definitely not stolen or dodgy.

DPs mate isn't the kind of person who knows people that make their own jam etc.
