to not like "woman" on Mumsnet?

I don't know why, but it always sounds like a put down. Whenever someone posts "this woman" it always sounds (in MY head anyway) like "I don't like her" as opposed to "lady" which somehow sounds better. I'm probably a snob Grin, but I always use "lady" and "gentleman" when I'm talking to my DCs as well. Am I the only one?

I always use "woman", with the following exceptions:

dinner lady
cleaning lady
elderly/older lady

I'm in my late 50s, which might explain a bit.

TheVermiciousKnid · 04/07/2013 08:48

I'm most definitely in my 40s and don't like 'lady', so I don't think it has necessarily got anything to do with age!

sue52 · 04/07/2013 08:52

I am over 60 and think "lady" rather twee.

You can't hear "lady" without hearing "I am a Laydeee I do Laydeee's things"

Sometimes, what with all the social faux pas that comes from trying to be polite and non gender/age disparaging, I think it would be an awful lot easier if we said fuck face.

The fuck face next door said...

I got a lovely compliment from fuck face...

Darling, mind the fuck face in front of you...

Say thank you to the nice fuck face place....

Have you seen this Fuck face?

AIBU to moan about the fuck face on the bus?

See. Totally universal, absolutely no room for offence, at all.

I don't agree but I do like your style! It sounds very quaint!

There was a thread the other day where a poster said she'd never trusted females, and she referred to females throughout her posts.

I have a (gay, male) friend who uses 'female' as a withering insult. To me, female sounds much worse than girl or lady. Woman just sounds normal.

chocolatecrispies · 04/07/2013 09:18

I'm the opposite - I feel snobbish about using 'lady' - sounds patronising to me, like dinner lady or cleaning lady - much prefer woman. When I worked in a shop 'woman' was considered rude though, I was reprimanded for not using 'lady'.

mrsjay · 04/07/2013 09:21

we cant say girl we cant say woman somebody has to lie down if lady is said what are we supposed to say I am so confused Grin

Latara · 04/07/2013 09:23

Are you a lady pigeon by any chance?

mrsjay · 04/07/2013 09:23

Lady was always used as a synonym for "bitch" where I grew up

well not quite bitch here but my nana used to tell us off with WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING LADY with a tone like we gota bit above ourselves

claraschu · 04/07/2013 09:24

pinkballetflats · 04/07/2013 09:31

I think it depends highly on your personal experience of the usage of the word. If you grew up in a household, for example, where the word was used in a derogatory fashion, it's likely that the same connotation is going to pop up for you whenever you hear the word, even when spoken in a non-derogatory fashion.
