...when I know shes got a longterm cash in hand job that she pays no tax on.

Not just me, half the office knows too. Shes working FT in one job and 15 hours cash in hand at weekends, and has been doing so for 18 months.

Just think its a bit bad form to be boasting about her tax rebate from her FT job when shes raking it in at weekends and paying no tax on this. I know shes working very hard and struggling to make ends meet (shes a single person) but my family was stung with a large tax bill last year and had to cough up loads, whilst shes getting away with it.

well you have 2 options:

don't report her - in which case shut up about it

report her - and shut up about it

tbh I would report anyone I KNEW was fiddling, but then I woukd just get on with my own life. I dont ubderstand being enraged but not doing anything about it

lastnightiwenttomanderleyagain · 02/07/2013 17:13

Completely agree with NotYoMomma - does she know that she has to pay tax on the cash in hand income? (trying to establish if she's ignorant or knowingly dishonest!)

ManAliveThisThingsFantastic · 02/07/2013 17:18

I would definitely report her, I'm sure you can do it anonymously and to be honest, I find it pretty immoral if you don't especially if you are already "enraged" about it.

I think it just shows her ignorance if she's boasting about a tax rebate as it means the tax man has been earning interest on that money rather than her.
Agree either shop her or let it go.

Yanbu to be annoyed with someone that's boasting, but at least she paying tax to get a rebate on. There are plenty of people that work cash in hand and don't pay a penny in tax.

Tbh, if you know she working full time in the week and doing loads of extra at weekends and is still struggling, I'd be inclined to leave her be.

TheFallenNinja · 02/07/2013 17:30

Is this weekend job cash in hand or paid in cash? She may well be getting cash wages ( like in the good old days) that are taxed.

2rebecca · 02/07/2013 17:47

If you work as a self employed person then you will be paid cash in hand and it's up to you to declare it. Many people don't for infrequent small amounts eg babysitting, but if you don't for a regular job you are taking a dangerous gamble as if you get caught you will be severely penalised and in a recession people don't like to see people cheating the system and are more likely to shop you.

MaxPepsi · 02/07/2013 18:02

How do you know she's not paying tax, or in fact declaring it?

My DH has a 2nd job to make ends meet. He gets paid cash for these. He will at the end of the tax year be declaring all of this. HE won't be taxed however due to the expenses he incurs doing the 2nd job.

Get all the facts first.
