I thought there was something around child neglect or endangerment

Who's done what?

HeySoulSister · 29/06/2013 09:34

Drunk or having a few drinks?

NinthWave · 29/06/2013 09:34

Depends how drunk.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 29/06/2013 09:35

Why Scotland?

NinthWave · 29/06/2013 09:35

IMO having a drink once kids in bed is ok, getting pissed at teatime and letting your kids see it = not nice

Tee2072 · 29/06/2013 09:36

How drunk? More detail, please.

auntmargaret · 29/06/2013 09:42

It's s12 of the Children and Young Persons (Scotland) Act, but it has to be behaviour which is likely to cause harm to the child so the circumstances of the drunkenness would be relevant. If they were all in bed and asleep, it's not a problem. If they were out and about with a person who was drunk, that's likely to be viewed differently.

I'm just sitting wondering whether I'm the weird one for thinking I would never do this . I'm in Scotland and this is the first weekend of our summer holidays . Theres been quite a few pictures and status on Facebook about starting summer with the kids and they mostly all involve alcohol . One in particular was a few mums and their kids all at a caravan posting pictures of bottles of vodka and them doing shots . Just made me feel a bit uncomfortable . Is that just me ?

I think it's similar to leaving a child alone- no prob unless a child comes to harm.

Don't know what The Law says though.

x2boys · 29/06/2013 09:56

oh for gods sake your allowed to have a few drinks whilst on holiday what I would not do is get completely incapable!

pianodoodle · 29/06/2013 10:04

My husband recently got so drunk he didn't know where he was. Attempted to bath our 2 year old before I stopped him.

Am just thankful I wasn't out at the time.

That's why he left with a bag packed for him last week (this isn't a first offence) . Until I trust it won't happen again he will stay left.

I don't know what the law says but I know what I say - it's not on!

A few drinks yes but not drunk.

Moominsarehippos · 29/06/2013 10:05

Drinking around kids is fine. As long as you aren't drinking a bottle of vodka aor red wine day then staggering up the road to pick up my DN from primary school.

Sensible drinking around kids is not the same from being an alcoholic (a barely functioning one at that).

The same offence exists in England/Wales too: S1(1) The Children and Young Persons Act 1933.

ALittleBitOfMagic · 29/06/2013 10:12

To clarify : I am talking about drunk not a few drinks . And I said scotland because that's where I am and the law is different in all parts of the uk . If I didn't say I was in Scotland it's probable I would have been informed on English law .

piano Shock you must have got such a fright ! At least you were there with tmyour wits about you !!

One parent coming in from a night out is different to all the adults sitting getting hammered while the kids run amok !

HeySoulSister · 29/06/2013 10:15

Is that what's happening tho? You just said a few pics on Facebook of bottles?

ALittleBitOfMagic · 29/06/2013 10:19

Well if I were having a few drinks I wouldnt be doing shots . They are specifically designed to get you drunk . But I'm not saying they definitely are getting drunk I'm just saying if they are is it against the law . For all I know it could have been juice the the shot glasses Hmm all the Facebook chatter just made me think about it that's all .

pianodoodle · 29/06/2013 10:22

If it's drunk you mean rather than just a couple of social drinks then definitely no.

It's fine if you want to go and get drunk and arrange a babysitter I suppose..

But yes I did get a fright and that was with me there never mind if he'd been own his own. I don't know what will take longest - for him to sort himself out or for me to stop fuming!

perplexedpirate · 29/06/2013 10:25

Not sure about Scotland, but last year near me (England, North-West) a couple were arrested after taking their child, in a pushchair, with them on a 7 HOUR pub crawl. When the police arrested them the child had a filthy nappy on and the only thing it had to drink was a bottle of sour milk.
They were both trashed. Wankers. AngrySad

pianodoodle · 29/06/2013 10:53

A baby on a pub crawl?! Bloody hell! And I felt a bit guilty the other day about giving DD the same thing for dinner as she had for lunch... Kind of puts things in perspective a bit!

perplexedpirate · 29/06/2013 13:50

Piano, this is same town that a girl was arrested in a pub brawl and told the arresting officer that she couldn't be put in the cells as her two year old was in bed at home, alone.
Police broke in to her house and there was the poor mite, all on her own while mum was out getting into drunken scraps.
S'nice round here Hmm
