Apparently it is frowned upon on MN.

Neo Doves gradual tan is great. It looks more brown than orange, and it doesn't have that horrible biscuity smell Grin

hellsbellsmelons · 28/06/2013 09:15

It's not fake tan as such it just deepens the colour of your skin.
I use Garnier Summer Body - the darker one.
Tend to only use it on my legs before I've been on holiday and I have to get my lets out.
Smells much nicer than the Dove one IMO.
Just make sure you wash your hands afterward.
It does take a good few hours for the colour to start to show so don't go mad with it.

TSSDNCOP · 28/06/2013 09:23

I use Sally Hansen on my legs nearly every day.

And for big nights out I have a professional spray tan. My salon uses Sienna and I have the lightest colour available.

I see it more as all over foundation, so a too deep colour would look absurd in the same way too dark foundation looks badly applied.

They only look shit if they aren't done properly, are too dark or the tannee doesn't do basic prep like exfoliating and moisturising.

Just read that its 'sad when people want to change the colour of their skin'

Can I tell you what's sad? My dd (14) has scars from a terrible crash so she uses spray tan from a can to help cover them up. So do her friends who were also cut to peices. It's very subtle and it looks lovely.

I suggest people mind their own business about how other girls and women apply tan or not and respectfully fuck the far end of fuck off.

TSSDNCOP · 28/06/2013 09:40

thebody I read that post and imagined the poster with a said DailyFail face. Then it made me laugh out loud.

I can think of a whole shit load of stuff to be sadder about then a bit of spray tan.

Hope your DD is OK xx

Elquota · 28/06/2013 10:01

I'm not a Daily Fail reader, thank you very much! Far from it. More like a leftie feminist who doesn't feel people should need to conform to what fashion thinks is an acceptable skin tone.

thebody I'm very sorry to hear what your DD has been through. That was definitely not the sort of tan use I was referring to.

I do think it's a pity when someone with dark skin feels they need to use skin lightening products to have a more "acceptable" skin colour.

And it's also a pity if some people with pale skin feel that their skin colour isn't acceptable, and they must darken it to look tanned orange.

Surely all natural skin colours are beautiful just as they are?

noddyholder · 28/06/2013 10:03

St tropez naturals is great or decleor gradual I am using atm is very light and not smelly at all

fluffyraggies · 28/06/2013 10:11

Tesco's own, gradual tan. Goes on like a normal white cream - turns your skin a couple of shades browner after a couple of hours. I use it sparingly on my face as well once a week sometimes when i'm sick of the palid dreary colour my skin is after a few weeks of shitty british summer.

When ever i do use it i get people saying i look good. DH will comment and say you look lovely today. Can't put his finger on why. He doesn't say you look orange today! I've got 3 teenage DDs who would be the first to tell me i looked orange if i did.

My tip - don't put it on dry skin (exfoliate and moisturise your dry bits first). Don't put it on every day (unless you want to go quite dark) and don't forget the backs of your legs as well as your shins. Oh and wear those thin latex gloves while you apply it and then there's no need for hand scrubbing afterwards.

Dumpylump · 28/06/2013 10:20

I really recommend Dove summer Glow, which is a lovely body lotion with a gradual self tanner combined. It looks extremely natural, and is on offer in Tesco at the moment - 2 bottles for £5 instead of £5:50 each!
I've been using it in the summer for the last three or four years and have often been complimented on it. My friend who works in a fab salon and does spray tanning as part of her job, went and bought some after seeing my arms last week - high praise indeed!

tamora · 28/06/2013 11:09

Thanks for these tips.
I'll try the Tesco gradual tan first. How long do you have to leave it before you get dressed?
I only want to do my legs so I can wear a skirt if the weather ever improves. Just a very pale shade of brown would be nice.

thebody · 28/06/2013 11:20

But it's not sad is it? If pale wants to go darker and dark paler how is that sad?

People change their hair colour every day.

It's personal choice.

Thanks dd doing ok..ish.

milktraylady · 28/06/2013 11:30

Or you could try the instant tan leg "paint".
They only wash off in the shower with lots of soap. I use the superdrug gosh one in light, it's lovely & not orange. It just takes a bit of the bright white away! And no worries about streaks.

squoosh · 28/06/2013 11:30

People in Asian countries using skin lightening products is very sad. And nothing like colouring their hair.

Ghostsgowoooh · 28/06/2013 13:46

I have vitiligo which means I have lost all my natural skin pigment. I will never tan and im am three times more likely to get skin cancer than a normal person.

I have large patches of different coloured skin over my body and I have had people staring or negative comments to deal with and its dented my confidence somewhat. Fake tan evens it all out and makes me feel better about myself. I couldnt give a shit whether I was seen as a towie wannabe!

Szeli · 28/06/2013 16:27

It doesn't look fake if its done well. The ones you notice are the ones done badly. I use LA Tan and not one client has ever looked orange yet.

However, some people do covet the 'orange' look and if they want to let em! In my experience St Tropez and Fake Bake have more orangey tones to them. If you prefer the towie look

trixymalixy · 28/06/2013 16:31

I use a gradual tanner like dove or Johnson's. I find fake tan too dark. I also have recently discovered the rimmel wash off one which is good if you are short of time.

Bambi27 · 29/06/2013 00:21

I have a spray than every two weeks...I love it! Who cares what people think if you like it?

theodorakisses · 29/06/2013 07:34

I use this one, it is organic, completely natural and ingedients have not been tested on animals. It still has a slight smell but nowhere near and unlike normal fake tans, I didn't need steroids to treat my allergic reaction!

Cat98 · 29/06/2013 08:23

Oh for goodness sake, who cares if people want to use fake tan? You may not think it looks good but it's their choice, and a hell of a lot better than frying on a sunbed!

Does the tesco gradual tanner go streaky? I usually try and use tinted ones that you can see the application of, but that one sounds good. I used to use fake tab regularly but haven't really bothered since having ds, a healthy glow sounds good though!

fluffyraggies · 29/06/2013 08:34

I feel i should be on commission for Tesco Grin

I have only found the Tesco own one go streaky if i've been careless and and rushed it. On occasion i've got blaze and slapped on the cream and rubbed it in quickly it did look a little uneven later that day. But even then that's me noticing it, no one else. If you rub it in just a bit more thoroughly than you would a normal moisturiser you'll be ok.

How long to leave it before dressing - well ... i dress right away sometimes if it's just on my legs and i'm putting on a skirt. I wouldn't put it on and then put tights or jeans on. What i do try to avoid for as long as poss is sitting down! (half an hour or so) Otherwise the product rubs off on to what you're sitting on and you have pale backs of legs.

If i've put it right across my arms and chest i'll try to not put my bra on for an hour or so. Otherwise the straps make streaks. If it's just on my upper arms, again i'll dress within 10 mins or so.

The best thing of all is Tesco's own is only about £3 :)

Mrsrobertduvall · 29/06/2013 08:36

People do get their knickers in a twist over the smallest things.

I have booked dd16 and I to have St Tropez tans before we go on holiday...we are like milk bottles, and it just makes me feel better as I bare my body in a bikini. It gives a healthy glow, not ooma loompa
Orange ness.

LouiseD29 · 29/06/2013 08:37

I use the odd bit of fake just to take the edge off my bright white legs (and to help them match my arms which usually pick up the sun a bit quicker). Never orange though, and actually, never even really what anyone else would call tanned. Much better than sunbathing which is a) boring, b) bad for you and c) quite hard to do in this country!

That said, I'm 34 weeks pg and can no longer reach my legs. Sad

fluffyraggies · 29/06/2013 08:39

Oh, and i'd like to say i've spent a fortune on other self tan creams such as St'Tropez, Clarins, and that one in a box with a pic of a woman in the jungle (£28 odd) and they are all in a bag upstairs somewhere after one of two uses. I keep going back to the good old Tesco one.

Chesntoots · 29/06/2013 10:48

I use the Superdrug ones. They are pretty good. I agree that you shouldn't do it on dry skin or it looks patchy.

My natural tan looks a bit fake tannish, sadly. But at least it means I can top it up without anyone noticing!

HighInterestRat · 29/06/2013 10:56

I wear fake tan. I'm a very dark haired, olive skinned person and I'm anaemic so often look washed out without it. I also find it makes my skin soft, my arms amd legs look slimmer and I don't really bother with sunbathing or beds either. It's win win for me.
