to wipe the table/countertops with the dishcloth?

I use the same cloth that I wash up dishes with to wipe the table/table mats and the kitchen counter-tops.

I change the cloth regularly and microwave it most evenings too.

I always thought this was normal (after all the only surfaces I wipe with it are 'eating' ones), but a friend came round the other day and was shocked.

Do you have a separate table/counter-tops cloth to the dishcloth? AIBU for not doing that?!

I do the same as you. The cloth gets replaced every week or more often if necessary, and disinfected regularly too. What does your 'shocked' friend do then? Does she wipe each surface with a one-use cloth while wearing a HazMat suit?

dawntigga · 27/06/2013 08:21

YANBU, we are the ones who won't get wiped out by some innocuous bug that the super clean people will.

imnotmymum · 27/06/2013 08:22

What else would you wipe the top/table with? I am very confused what does she do?

Binkyridesagain · 27/06/2013 08:23

Yanbu, I do the same.

Ragwort · 27/06/2013 08:24

I do the same, but I remember house-sharing with someone who was very pernikity about this sort of thing - three separate cloths in the kitchen alone !

and I would wipe my baby's face with the same cloth sometimes Grin

KFFOREVER · 27/06/2013 08:27

I have a wet cloth by the sink to wipe down surfaces and a sponge to wash the dishes with. I thought that was the norm.

TanglednotTamed · 27/06/2013 08:30

I didn't ask her what she does - I felt a bit embarrassed! Maybe it's the sponge/cloth thing that KF does?

I have a separate flannel for the toddler but DH sometimes mops up spills with that

I'm confused too. I use a microfibre cloth for everything and chuck it in the machine every few days. Sometimes I clean the floor with it first, to make sure it really needs a wash!

Bunbaker · 27/06/2013 08:46

I do what KFFOREVER does. I disinfect and microwave my dishcloth regularly, as well as sticking it in the washing machine whenever I use it.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 27/06/2013 08:50

I use a washing up sponge for dishes and wiping down surfaces.

Sometimes I use wipes to go over the work top if it's particularly messy (meaning, after DH has cooked!).

I fail to see why it's disgusting.

StealthPolarBear · 27/06/2013 08:52

Yes, one cloth here, although we don't do a lot of washing up with it as we have a spongey thing (and a dishwasher). That said if I've run out of spongey thngs I'd happily use the cloth to wash up - it's not for hygiene reasons that we have the two. Chuck it in the washing machine every few days or if I've cleaned the floor with it :)

bootsycollins · 27/06/2013 08:52

I use disposable cloths, £1 for 10 in Aldi, I really can't be arsed washing dishcloths.

Beehatch · 27/06/2013 09:49

I use the sponge for washing and cloth for wiping method. Cloths washed whenever the washing machine goes on (daily) and ditched as soon as they start developing that patina of greyness.

What does get my goat is DP who uses the manky washing up water to dip the cloth in and wipe around Angry instead of drawing some clean water. The thought of that turgid, greasy water all over my surfaces is talk about a feast for lurking bacteria.

Jan49 · 27/06/2013 09:57

I use 2 separate cloths, one for surfaces and one for washing up. I'm not really sure why.Hmm I think it's what's recommended. But I wouldn't be "shocked" by someone using the same cloth for both, unless they also wiped the floor with it.

MissMarplesBloomers · 27/06/2013 10:03

I use a fresh cloth & use it for everything & sling it in a bucket we keep for hot wash things.

I change them & the tea-towels every day. When they get too manky they
get used for a one off job like loos or mudy boots & binned.

I use disposables too at times but they're not very green so I try not to!

Fakebook · 27/06/2013 10:03

I use a sponge for dishes and those microfibre cloths for wiping down and then I have a special cloth for cupboards and the kitchen hood that wipes away grease without use of sprays. I also have separate cloth for the floor. My mum never mixed cloths and stuff, so I get it from her.

My mum also never machine washed tea towels and did it by hand. I only started machine washing them when I had DS and after reading a thread on here.

valiumredhead · 27/06/2013 10:39

I use the same cloth but change it every day.

ShatnersBassoon · 27/06/2013 10:45

I use the kitchen cloth for wiping and washing, but change it every day.

I don't like all this nonsense when people freak out about a table germ being utterly incompatible with a washing up germ, and that being feckless with a cloth makes bacteria multiply uncontrollably and that eventually you will kill yourself by using crockery that is put on a table that came into contact with a cloth that also touched that table and the plates Confused

melika · 27/06/2013 10:48

Are you still alive, if yes, then forget it. She is being over the top about it.
She is BU.

Harriebabe · 27/06/2013 10:50

I must be the most unhygienic person around! I use one cloth which could hang around for weeks without being washed or disinfected or replaced and I have been known to mop up floor spills with it too..... but I can honestly say we (me, OH, 2 DC) have never knowingly been ill through it - in fact, I can't remember the last time any of us were ill at all! Life is just too short and hectic :)

Must say though, my Mother is always horrified by the state of my dishcloth and sometimes sneaks a new one in when I'm not looking!

BionicEmu · 27/06/2013 10:54

I have five different cloths & sponges in my kitchen. They are labelled "baby bottles", "dishes", "worktop", "floor" & "bleach". Blush

They get washed or replaced regularly, although sometimes a bottle sponge gets relabelled as a floor or bleach sponge once it's getting a bit past it.

I really am not a clean person at all though, I am usually a complete slattern! This is the only thing I am particular about.

Montybojangles · 27/06/2013 10:59

One cloth and one sponge, jobs interchangeable. Pop them both in the dishwasher daily to be cleaned/sterilised.

Montybojangles · 27/06/2013 10:59

With all my dishes, obviously. They don't get a special wash of their own!

notso · 27/06/2013 11:02

I have recently started using separate ones for wiping and washing up but only because,
1.the wiping ones get manky more quickly thanks to 14 month old DS3 refusing to eat with a spoon despite not BLW for this very reason Hmm

  1. having two means DH can clean the surfaces while I wash up.
threesypeesy · 27/06/2013 11:06

We use kitchen roll 4 a wewk to wipe down kitchen and bathroom surfaces not a cloth or spongs boak that way there thrown straight in the bin no lingering germs.
