I love my mum but I think she's seriously lost the plot. She's visiting at the moment and is a bit upset that I won't let my son have any of the chocolate she brought him. She thinks I'm being PFB and a little bit won't harm him and he'll enjoy it. I think she's out of her tree.

My son is 8 weeks old Shock!

At ds1's 6 week check I met up with the girl who'd been in the bed next to me on the post natal ward. She was a teenager, and her mum was at the clinic with her, and her mum told me with great pride how the baby was eating bits of chocolate, and mashed-up roast dinner from the side of granny's plate!

I was gobsmacked, and all I could think of to do was to tell her to be sure and tell the HV - and hope the HV would deal with the issue!

SummerRainIsADistantMemory · 26/06/2013 23:44

Oh lord.

Good luck Grin

SoftlySoftly · 26/06/2013 23:44

BlackeyedSusan · 26/06/2013 23:45

just a few sandwiches? the whole bloody picnic.

WestieMamma · 26/06/2013 23:51

She's also completely obsessed with wind and winding him. He hiccups, that's because he's got wind. He dribbles, that's because he's got wind. Waking up to feed in the night? That'll be the wind. The colour of his cheeks. The position of his lips. The way he kicks his legs. It's all down to the wind.

Just waiting for the 'he wouldn't get wind if he was allowed some chocolate ...' :o

Oh bless her.😃

Oldraver · 27/06/2013 00:02

Oh my MIL was obsessed with DS1 having wind (he never really had it much). Every little squeak out of him ,even if it was in his sleep in the pram, would have her grabbing him squishing his lovely little face with her hand and walloping him on the back. I would have to rescue him from this onslaught

BadgersNadgers · 27/06/2013 08:08

Is it a generational thing? They're obsessed with wind.

I have to admit one of DS2's first solid foods was a chocolate brownie that he swiped from my plate. The HV laughed and said it was good for his iron levels Grin

MalcolmTuckersMum · 27/06/2013 08:13

YAB so U. Have you tried him with a bit of lager and a puff or two from a Marlboro? You really should - it's time he experienced a bit of life. Grin

hiddenhome · 27/06/2013 08:24

Cadburys cream eggs and a can of redbull, that's what they need Grin

imnotmymum · 27/06/2013 08:31

So funny! As I was reading I was thinking poor kid his nan brings him chocolate and not allowed it...8 weeks. Grate it Grin

HoppinMad · 27/06/2013 08:33

YANBU keep an eye on her, she may try and give it when you aren't looking yes mil rather like you

OP, I wonder how many weeks old you were when she gave you your first chocolate??

beginnings · 27/06/2013 08:35

First grandchild perchance?? My mum was BRILLIANT in the first three weeks whilst I was a basket case but was then a nightmare until DD was about 9 months when DD essentially learned to tell her to fuck off when she was annoying her and mum took it.

Utterly bonkers Grin bless her.

HSMMaCM · 27/06/2013 08:38

My family thought it would be fun to give my DD drops of red wine (while I was out of the room) when I wouldn't let her join in with a family Sunday roast at 2 months old! She is 14 now and hates wine Grin.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 27/06/2013 08:41

when ds1 was 3 he had a tantrum....my mum blamed it on wind .
Her picnic is also severely depleted :)

rainbowfeet · 27/06/2013 08:44

With dd1 my mil (now ex mil) was obsessed with giving dd tea!!! Literally from birth onward every visit or phone call was "have you tried her with tea yet"? One visit to her house she actually made an extra cup "milky no sugar" that I could pour into dd's bottle!!! I didn't know where to start the fact that dd was a few months & too young for cows milk yet alone bloody tea!!!! Shock

MammaTJ · 27/06/2013 08:47

She is so severely short of sandwiches that there is no picnic!! Bless!

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 27/06/2013 08:53

DH's Gran bought our baby a chocolate teddy bear, before he was even born!

She told us we could rub the chocolate in his gums. Needless to say we ate it.

Squitten · 27/06/2013 08:55

Ye Gods. My family are poised to shove crap down the throats of my children as soon as possible but even they would draw the line at 8wks!

She is barmy

MarinaIvy · 27/06/2013 08:56

Your mum may be short of a picnic, but how are your ants?

pinkballetflats · 27/06/2013 09:10

I don't have any words really.

What is it with family members being obsessed with shoving their parenting ideals onto their adult children? I can't wait for my grandmother in law to start...that should be super!

Does your mum know that babies' digestive systems aren't designed to take solids straight away? That their kidneys cannot cope with filtering as well as an older child's can? That food no specifically made for young babies can be very damaging?
