To be a tad peeved that ds1 was offered an apprenticeship and that lack of organisation by his college to coordinate his practical exams and intervention by his tutor explaining that "not sure if he's upto it" to his employer has lost him his job??? He was only kid on course that had got a job too. Is that his role as a tutor ?? Opinions please before i go in and kick him in bollocks have a little chat.

Yup, definitely kick him in the bollocks!! What a horrible thing to say.

McGeeDiNozzo · 27/06/2013 06:20

Exactly the fucking opposite of what a personal tutor is supposed to do! Squeeze them balls!

bochead · 27/06/2013 06:25

Who does the Tutor report to? Frankly I'd be demanding a face to face appointment with the College principal and for a written apology to be added to my child's file. What is the end goal of going to college if not to get a job. Apprenticeships are few and far between and this is a MAJOR life chance destroyed. I'd also complain to Ofsted, as 100% course participants at risk of NEETism isn't a good course outcome by any stretch of the imagination.

BeckAndCall · 27/06/2013 06:29

Are you absolutely sure that's how it happened? If so, I'd be doing the bollock kicking too.

But it may have been misreported, or exaggerated, or the offer may not be an offer but an approach to gauge interest and skills - it just seems so far from how you'd expect a tutor to act that it's hard to believe.

BoneyBackJefferson · 27/06/2013 07:05

what exactly do you mean by co-ordination of his practical exams?

Socksorter · 27/06/2013 07:23

Thanks everyone - he definitely had the offer and has been working with the company when not in college since easter and worked half term too - they have paid him, he loved it and there were no problems with his work that he/we know of - small hiccup of no contract though. Was just told that as soon as exams finished he would be full time.

However aspects of his particular trade is difficult, another tutor told us that one particular exam was very difficult this year for 1st years and he was that concerned that he was going to contact exam people to complain - every student on course failed exam and they're on there 3rd resit. This tutor said that even this was no problem, wouldn't affect his

Apprenticeship and he would do all he could to get him through it next year (especially as he has a job). This is kind of support youd expect.

The main thing that is griping me me that "unhelpfull" tutor has a friendship of sorts with boss shagging sister (sorry might be bit early for that) and has gone out of his way to make things difficult, even stooping to photograph a piece if practical work he got wrong and text it to boss as a joke (hilarious). Thing is, his other tutors gave him good feedback no problems, doing well etc.
Don't know what to think but you have all pretty much said what i was thinking so major moral support boost - thank you.

What? You need to make a formal complaint about this conduct.

Socksorter · 27/06/2013 07:40

He was supposed to do a two day practical that was supposed to then be his last week at work but this got cancelled due to technician being in hols ", then was not really arranged just an hour here, two hours there, finish it off sometime next week, that type of thing, he was even take out of his practical for 4 hours to do a course that had been cancelled earlier in the year. Outcome of this being employer "when are you finishing college then, you should be at work". Apparently this was one of reasons he was dropped as he had said college finished on a particular day (as confirmed by college) only to be there longer due to unfinished exams. (Does that make sense?)

BoneyBackJefferson · 27/06/2013 19:19

Sock

Yes that makes sense, as zoobaby posted put in a formal complaint to the college.

plieadianpony · 27/06/2013 21:08

Tell him to call the employer (DS) and tell them he really really wants the apprenticeship and ask them whether there is a way it could still go ahead. He could point out thaT he is the ONLY person on the course that had a job offer. This alone shows he has some capability. There must be a way around it.

This tutor is a total p*k. Complain to the college. The texting thing is particularly horrible. What a savage imbecile.

Socksorter · 27/06/2013 23:41

He has done that today but has been told that as he has finished course later than expected and his tutor believes he has not got the commitment he should have, then they have to withdrawn offer - what can you do?? I shall be taking this further with college though!! Thanks again everyone for the support and advice

Socksorter · 28/06/2013 00:14

Just feel really sorry fir him - its sometimes a bit shit being a teenager.

ConfusedPixie · 28/06/2013 00:19

Jeez, complain until you cannot complain any more. I'd push for whatever bloody apologies I could get and try to get the tutor to take back comments and ensure he gets his job back if possible. They have fucked up big time Shock

TotallyBursar · 28/06/2013 01:46

Fuck me - sharing his work as a 'joke' and then that call?

That's a sacking offense.

By which I mean a hessian sack, tied behind a car.

Your poor ds Angry for him. Still, with his obvious aptitude he shouldn't have to wait long for another offer, competence is hard to come by; and it may be a blessing in disguise - whoever the tutor was communicating with there sounds markedly unprofessional.

BoneyBackJefferson · 28/06/2013 16:24

I don't often say this but

Call Ofsted, list all of your concerns and push for them to inspect the college.
