To throw a strop in my notice period?

fackinell · 26/06/2013 19:47

Have quit job Grin and working out my notice. I only had to give 2wks notice but gave a month. I have now been kindly given the gift of an amazing day out next wk (can only be this day and I get 3 days off a wk from work.)

Boss today said it doesn't look do-able (but not confirmed yet.) they're not replacing me when I go but two people will be on holidays next wk. I'm really pissed off at the thought I can't get my day out (probably.) AIBU to say stuff it I've done my required notice and quit early or refuse to work that day?

I'm due a day in lieu but have been informed I can't take it in my notice period. I will be paid for it along with my outstanding holiday pay. I'm going to be working from home for myself and pt for DP if need be. I wont need a ref from them. I always switch shifts, work over and come in on days off to cover sickness so I'm Angry that I may miss my day out.

If youve done your two weeks notice id call in sick that day.

fackinell · 26/06/2013 19:52

I'm tempted, Jumping, but they know about it now. It makes me cringe that they'd know I was blatantly lying!!

If you don't legally need to work that notice then I would be inclined to say stuff them.

Especially as you have always been a good worker in the past.

ChippingInWiredOnCoffee · 26/06/2013 20:04

Call in sick - what are they going to do? If they can't be reasonable about a few days when you have given them double the notice period then...

combinearvester · 26/06/2013 20:06

Whilst working out my notice period I once used the immortal line 'What you gonna do - sack me?' during a dispute over an item of work.... What a twat. Don't burn any bridges.

fackinell · 26/06/2013 20:06

Haha, knowing my luck, Thebody, they'll say this was the notice of my notice period and the next two weeks are my actual notice!! I will do it as a last resort but had hoped to pop
In and visit. Also they have my last pay check to withhold if need be. Although I'm not sure they legally could...

LalyRawr · 26/06/2013 20:07

Call in sick, what's the worst they can do? Sack you?

Oops, you're already leaving!

Legally they can do jack all.

If you weren't waving it would be disciplinary etc. but that's a bit pointless if you're leaving in two weeks isn't it?

By the by, if you DO call in, please be aware they cannot dock you any of your outstanding holiday or lieu day.

LalyRawr · 26/06/2013 20:08

Waving should be leaving clearly...

LittleMissGerardButlerfan · 26/06/2013 20:11

I would say to them I have already worked my notice so either you let me have that one day off or I won't come in at all! It must be better for them for you to just have one day off?

fackinell · 26/06/2013 20:11

Ok, you're convincing me on a sick day, although I did have a (rare) one a few wks ago. I'll make up something creative then, any suggestions? No tempting fate ones though!!! Last time was a chest infection (cough.)

OP posts:
fackinell · 26/06/2013 20:12

That's what DP says, Little.

DeathByTray · 26/06/2013 20:12

What LittleMiss said.

Suddenly it will become "do-able" Grin

eurozammo · 26/06/2013 20:16

I'd be upfront about it. I'd write to them saying you've actually served your contractual notice and you are staying on an extra 2 weeks to help them out, which you are not obliged to do. However you will not be able to work on X day. You are happy for them to either treat it as unpaid leave or use of the day in lieu.

DespicableYou · 26/06/2013 20:18

I am actually going to go against the grain and say that you should honour the commitment you made to them.

LalyRawr · 26/06/2013 20:20

Food poisoning is normally pretty solid!

Comes on quickly, is awful while you have it and goes away fairly quickly.

fanjobiscuits · 26/06/2013 20:21

Will you want a reference from them in future?

fackinell · 26/06/2013 20:23

Oooh I like that, Euro.

That's what has made me post, Despicable. It was of my doing, I just feel its really unfair as Saturday could have been my last day. It wouldn't have changed the fact that two people are off next week but they wouldn't have me the four days I am in at all.

FurryDogMother · 26/06/2013 20:24

Creative idea for a sick day - labyrinthitis - an inner ear infection, makes you fall over a lot - imbalanced - and feel nauseous. I hvae used it to great effect in the past (but it usually lasts more than one day!).

fackinell · 26/06/2013 20:26

Laly, that is true...dodgy takeaway on Tuesday night Grin

I'm assuming not, Fanjo. I've been doing my extra work as my other pt job and its taken off hugely. DP has his own business and would give me work/ref no problem.

OP posts:
hermioneweasley · 26/06/2013 20:28

I agree with Euro. You never know when you will need to rely on your good reputation.

rosepettel · 26/06/2013 20:28

its kk to do a strop
everone gets moody some times in there period

fackinell · 26/06/2013 20:28

More than one suits me, Furry. Then I can really kick the arse out of it and have a hangover and everything!! Grin

scarlettanager · 26/06/2013 20:31

wot euro said

Relaxedandhappyperson · 26/06/2013 20:33

Don't call in sick - just tell them the say before that you're not coming in. Then come in to do the rest of your notice. As others have said - they are hardly likely to do anything except moan.

fackinell · 26/06/2013 20:41

Saying I won't be in is probably the nicest way to do it. I would be letting a lot of people down for this day out (it involves family too.) I'm not prepared to miss it over a job I'm leaving anyway. I'm really regretting this other two wks now. My boss is such a great person but he's passed it on to the DM who leaves me in no doubt of her dislike of me, particularly as I'm leaving to pursue my own dream,
