I know no one on MN reads the DM but wondered if anyone had, accidently by chance, seen Carol Sarler's defence of Saatchi in today's edition?

of course Nigella is not a victim of domestic abuse

how could she be she always seems so happy and confident and has a successful career and of course she is from a upper middle class family

not sure how a battered wife is meant to act or look like none of the women I have worked with are a type but they have partners that follow similar patterns. I am guessing a nervous woman who would not fight back like for example Madonna Hmm would she be her definition of battered wife

thanks for c&p shows Carol Sarler has no understanding at all of domestic abuse and once again it is victim blaming

DarceyBissell · 26/06/2013 18:15

Malcolm - Are you referring to me with this comment -
"I'm sure you can find some way past your DM boycott if you want to read it - how on earth you hope to stay informed by refusing to read from certain publications is beyond me!"
If so you are being incredibly patronising and rude. How the hell do you know what I read?

Body - OK. Feeling bit touchy for some reason.

'Nor is there reason to believe that Nigella Lawson fits the mould of the battered wife. I do not pretend to know her well, but we worked on the same newspaper many years ago and I found her perfectly affable, quietly ambitious and wholly able to stand on her own two feet'

Yes, because victims of domestic abuse are always quiet and shy, even when in pulic. They all fit a certain mould Hmm
I know quite a few women who have been in abusive relationships. Almost all of them come across as confident, intelligent strong women (because they are) and yet the were definitely victimes of abuse.

mignonette · 26/06/2013 18:41

CS needs to raise her journalistic profile and she does it on the back of Nigella Lawson's misfortune. Nice......

Best to kill the attention. CS has seen all the lovely coverage given to other sleazeball columnists and wants some for herself.

Are we going to give it to her?

BIWI · 26/06/2013 19:33

No Darcey - I think it was referring to me. As was your post "can't have it both ways" Hmm

It's a common phenomenon; why wouldn't C Saatchi (or any man) be a batterer?
why are people so superficially opposed to DV but never believe any individual man could do it?

JuliaScurr · 26/06/2013 19:54

this focus on type of woman who is a victim - why?
focus on the perpetrator- what type of man beats/strangles his wife? Any type
Any type at all

thebody · 26/06/2013 19:55

No probs Darcey.

I have looked at the pictures of this incident again today and felt so upset at the expression of fear on Nigellas face.

The article is as crass as saying only dirty old men in macs abuse children. Ridiculous stereotyping.

MalcolmTuckersMum · 26/06/2013 19:58

No OP - I wasn't referring to you so errrr - calm down why don't you? I was referring to BIWI and I may have come across as ruder than I intended so Blush sorry to BIWI for that but I do still think that boycotting a publication hurts precisely nobody but doesn't do your all round education much good. And no - I don't mean 'education' as in proper education - it's the Mail ffs - but if you don't know what they're saying then you are, in a way, uninformed.

MalcolmTuckersMum · 26/06/2013 20:00

Oh - and Darcey - how hell I know what you read is because you started this thread by making that abundantly clear. HTH clear up your confusion.Smile

BIWI · 26/06/2013 20:00

I agree, to some extent, Malcolm. However, I have read enough of the Daily Mail to find them and their views abhorrent. And therefore I am not prepared to click on a link that will line their horrible coffers any further.

thebody · 26/06/2013 20:01

I read my dms copy so cheat. My dad has the guardian so they kinda cancel out each other.

Personally I wouldn't waste the money on either.

Waimea · 26/06/2013 21:29

"Fits the mould of battered wife"
That's fucking unbelievable
