To think they were selfish and stupid to do this?

Dd2 was very unhappy this morning at pre school drop off so I went to a nearby cafe for a cup of tea so that I was nearby if they phoned me to collect her. I had ds2 with me.

An elderly couple (grandparents I presume) came in with two little girls, the older of which was COVERED in chickenpox spots and calamine lotion, the spots were not scabbed over and looked quite sore and she was scratching a lot.

I just got up and left, I don't want ds catching it as he is just getting over a very bad uti (he's 14 months). That aside, anybody for whom c pox could be very dangerous may have been in there. I wanted to say something but didn't fancy causing a scene/getting into an argument.
The man working in the cafe (he was very young) looked bothered but didn't say anything.

AIBU to think they were extremely stupid and selfish to go to a cafe with a sick child?

yanbu, was the child herself unhappy?

WhataSook · 25/06/2013 13:20

is this one of those AIBU where you know you're not but you're looking for validation?? Confused

I think the previous 1000 few threads on this will show YANBU (happy?)

The little girl seemed ok apart from scratching at her scalp and face a lot.

Her face did look sore and was covered in calamine. Spots were red and blistery.I just can't believe people do this-mums with new babies often meet up there and its always busy. C pox can be so dangerous its just ridiculous.

Don't blame you at all. I'm afraid to say I can't remember the quarunteening guidelines for Chicken pox but you were completely reasonable in wanting to protect your Dd who has just been poorly himself.

ariane5 · 25/06/2013 13:23

No, I'm not looking for validation. I've seen a similar thread before.

I just couldn't believe how selfish they were.

You should have said something.... That generation may well still think its good to get cp out of the way early. They may not be aware of other risks

ariane5 · 25/06/2013 13:25

I wish I had said something now but I'm not keen on confrontation. The poor thing looked like she had it really badly and it shocked me that they obviously thought it was ok to go to a cafe.

Yanbu I'm 32 weeks pregnant and not immune to chicken pox if I catch it now I risk getting very ill and putting my unborn baby at risk, some people are just selfish and stupid

redexpat · 25/06/2013 15:00

Perhaps they didn't know? Different generations have different expectations, or they just cant remember.

xylem8 · 25/06/2013 20:17

You were just as likely to catch it at pre-school drop off

ariane5 · 25/06/2013 20:55

That's not the point though, obviously I don't want ds2 to get it but what worried me more was all the other people who could have been exposed.

Its a busy cafe, usually full of mums and babies. I imagine c pox in a newborn would be horrendous and it is dangerous for pregnant non immune women and those with weakened immune systems.

I left as don't want ds to be unwell again esp with c pox (dd was v poorly when she had it so other 2 dcs had jab as will ds2 shortly) but even if he did get it it probably wouldn't be life threatening like it could be for some.
