...to think this is the ugliest word in the English language?

DarceyBissell · 24/06/2013 19:18

...gobsmacked.
I have heard even BBC types say it, politicians even.
Every time I hear it I want to puncture my own eardrums. Ugly, crass, lazy, crude.
Also hate nouns as verbs - mothballed, torched etc.
Think I am too sensitive for this world.
Any other words/phrases make you see red?

PoshPaula · 25/06/2013 14:11

Has anyone mentioned 'snog'?

Awful. Awful. Awful.

valiumredhead · 25/06/2013 14:12

Snog is a great wordGrin

PoshPaula · 25/06/2013 14:14

No, No and No - 'Snog' is a horrible word.

As is 'Stink' when in the context of to 'stink (somewhere) out'.

PoshPaula · 25/06/2013 14:14

'Flap' can be upsetting as well.

LadyRabbit · 25/06/2013 16:01

I love all of you. For the first time in my life I no longer feel alone. I can come right out and say, loud and proud, yes I too am a word Nazi and it has been two hours, three minutes and fourteen seconds since I last judges someone for saying 'in actual fact it's really unique'.

LadyRabbit · 25/06/2013 16:02

*judgEd bloody autocorrect. Makes one look ever so foolish when one is trying to be a word snob.

persimmon · 25/06/2013 16:05

I hate "it's quite unique".

Flange and pupate give me the fear.

Branleuse · 25/06/2013 16:19

cluster

shudders

DarceyBissell · 25/06/2013 18:16

So many hates..so little time. Anyway, people who say ab-so-looot-ly all long and drawn-out.
People why can't finish a sentence without saying 'you know' after every third word. Worst offenders seem to be on Radio 4 interviews.

loveliesbleeding1 · 25/06/2013 18:31

Just remembered keep your eyes peeled ..just gross

TeamJesse · 25/06/2013 21:02

Anyhoo

ChairmanWow · 25/06/2013 22:23

Now let's try some word combinations:

Soiled, moist panty gusset.

Slimy snot rag.
Rancid cum-encrusted underpants.

To use another word I hate used in this context, enjoy!

ZadokTheBeast · 25/06/2013 22:53

Boobs. Hate, hate, HATE the word. Makes me go all eeeeewwwwww.

Joiningthegang · 25/06/2013 23:13

I like gobsmacked love gutted

Hate
Vagina
Moist
Gusset

Hate that thought showering is used instead if brainstorming
Hate "mat leave" just fucking say the word maternity

Joiningthegang · 25/06/2013 23:14

Yuk also goes to
Panties
Kiddies

PrettyKitty1986 · 25/06/2013 23:20

So thought this would be Cunt.

50shadesofbrown · 25/06/2013 23:32

"Drill down". Management speak rubbish. Used to have a manager who said this, made me want scream.

Also, "panties". Shudder.

mountains · 26/06/2013 12:52

Hehe... love this thread... What about meal? There was a great thread like this a while back and somebody mentioned it; I was so glad to see I wasn't the only one hating it. Makes me feel nauseous; 'going for the healthy option' does sound so depressing, doesn't it... you can feel the gloom...

ChrisTheSheep · 26/06/2013 13:04

I've never heard "holibobs" before, thank goodness, but it's now on my list along with "panties", "preggers", "bubs" and "potty" (for an adult-sized toilet, not the plastic toddler variety). As a northerner, though, I'm constitutionally incapable of being offended by butties.

This might be a two-nations-separated-by-a-common-language thing, but I also can't stand "burglarize": I mean, is the criminal in question supposed to be referred to as a burglarizer? Burglers go burgling, not burglarizing!

plannedshock · 26/06/2013 13:18

My friend is preggers with her bubs and she goes on holibobs-makes me want to rip my own fucking ears off!!
Discharge
Eggy
Also when people say owt or nowt. Haven't got owt/ doing nowt.

Branleuse · 26/06/2013 13:23

pregnant is a pretty hideous word itself, let alone preggers

BaconandEggButty · 26/06/2013 13:28

Oi there's nothing wrong with butty!
'trendy' or 'on trend' on the other hand make me want to heave!

BaconandEggButty · 26/06/2013 13:28

Prettykitty I thought this would be cunt too. But of course cunt is a fabulous word.

Viviennemary · 26/06/2013 13:30

I don't mind gobsmacked as it's so descriptive. IMHO. But I hate nouns used as verbs. DD once said she had georged some meat. What on earth!! I also hate a lot of shortforms. Piccie. Yuck.
