To ask for some positive feedback experiences for mirena/copper coil?

I am sick of taking the pill, been on it for decades and seriously panic about missing one and then accidentally falling pregnant (got 2 DCs, don't want any more). Hate condoms, and would feel edgy about using them as birth control. GPs are pushing mirena but I have heard so many scare stories about weight gain, pain, lack of sex drive. I have always had very light flow, so am not a candidate based on the argument that it will reduce flow dramatically. Surely there must be loads of people who haven't gained weight or had problems!!?? Please reveal yourselves to give me some reassurance.

I have a Mirena. My periods have not stopped but they are much lighter.

No side effects at all and am, in fact, losing weight.

smokinaces · 24/06/2013 17:31

Angels, I have only ever had csections. My fitting was not pleasant. 2 lots of local anaesthetic and I had to have a larger speclum and 2 clamps holding my cervix forced open. Needless to say my cervix spasmed. I was "that close" to having to be referred for a GA. My GP has sworn never to remove and replace in the same day, I have to have at least a month apart. It wasnt painful, more uncomfortable - and took a good 15-20 minutes in the end. But I have had god knows how many procedures on my cervix so maybe its just something I'm used to now.

intheshed · 24/06/2013 17:36

I have a copper coil- mostly I just forget it's there! My periods are heavier but shorter than before. As someone said earlier, it's nice to know what my own cycle is without all the hormones I took in various forms before pregnancy.

CruCru · 24/06/2013 17:39

I got a copper coil when I was 17. It was an effective form of birth control and getting it replaced was okay. Having said that, getting it put in initially was bloody awful (a nurse said that she was surprised my doctor did it as I was so young and hadn't had children).

Sallystyle · 24/06/2013 17:44

Well I had the Copper Coil..

Meet my DD Grin

Sorry Hmm

Alisvolatpropiis · 24/06/2013 18:43

Copper coil is the only contraception I would use now, having had it almost 5 years. I've no complaints.

Absolutely loved loved loved my mirena.
Autocorrect wanted to change that to:
Absolutely loved loved loved my mittens which would not have been helpful

doorbellringer · 24/06/2013 20:56

smokinaces it never occurred to me that even though I have a dc, I too was a section which I suppose in fanjo terms us the same as never having one. Oh I'm slightly apprehensive now.

GiveItYourBestShot · 24/06/2013 21:05

Angels, I've had 2 Mirenas, have never been pregnant, neither time needed GA. The first was done by Family Planning Clinic as they had more experience, the second time by my GP. A bit sore for a few days but aspirin and gin sorts that.

MisForMumNotMaid · 24/06/2013 21:12

I've got three dc and had the mirena fitted after the third, now 2. Its been in for two years. No periods - they used to be very heavy, no cramping, no mood swings, i was fat before so weight issues are hard to determine. Sex drive is up if anything but that maybe because DC3 is a sleeper.

I've just thrown away a dusty box of tampons. I haven't looked back, for me its fantastic.

MisForMumNotMaid · 24/06/2013 21:14

My three DC were all sections and fitting was only mildly uncomfortable. Its all down to the individual and it does appear to vary.

Labradorwhisperer · 24/06/2013 21:22

Mirena has worked for me. I haven't had children, so having it fitted was an experience I don't want to repeat without a general anaesthetic (or vodka), but then apparently I have a "sentisive cervix"....

Once fitted its fab. No weight gain, no periods at all, not even aware it's there. Definitely a long term solution for me.

elsie07 · 24/06/2013 21:22

Just about to have third one fitted and can't wait as periods are returning. Nothing bad to say about them (obviously as this will be third).

iamadoozermum · 24/06/2013 21:29

DC4 was conceived with a copper coil in place. Coil was in right place, Dr was very surprised, funnily enough, so were we! Now know lots of people who conceived with coil in place. Seems to be more of an issue with the copper coil than mirena which I couldn't have due to migraines.

GiveItYourBestShot · 24/06/2013 21:31

Elsie, is that how you tell when you need a new one? I've forgotten when mine went in .. Blush

HappySeven · 24/06/2013 21:32

I've had a copper coil for about 2.5 years. No problems at all - light, pain-free periods and normal sex drive. Almost as though it's not there (except it is, as I check regularly!)

Want2bSupermum · 24/06/2013 21:34

I got pregnant with DD while taking the pill (Yaz). I had a copper coil after DD and was taking the pill (Lolesterin). I got pregnant with DS! I am on the same pill as before plus we abstain during highest fertility days (obn marked them out as days 12-16). I will cry if I manage to get pregnant a 3rd time while using birth control.

Not sure of your age but if you are on the fertile side I would go with mirena over the copper coil if you can.

Cherriesarelovely · 24/06/2013 21:35

My friend has one and has literally had no problems with it. My Dp has one and has had quite a few problems and is probably going to have it taken out.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 24/06/2013 21:39

Thank you for sharing your mirena fitting without GA experiences. Sounds like it's different for everyone.

Doingakatereddy · 24/06/2013 21:44

Yep, it is different. I thank the fucking GP who took the damn thing out of me.

Evil, bastard Mirena

GiveItYourBestShot · 24/06/2013 21:48

Better than bastard periods!

AwsomeMrsFox · 24/06/2013 21:50

I'm on my second one now - about 7 years in and definitely worth the small discomfort of having it put in! No periods to worry about, no mood swings, I didn't suffer weight gain.

(another plus for me on this second one is the way the 'removal wires' are hanging - lets say when I move in a certin way they tickle an sensitive part :-))

missrlr · 24/06/2013 21:56

Had 2 fitted, first no issue second the daft GP nearly split me in two.

Ask how many they have done it is a SKILL and needs to be practised.
Would not hesitate in having another fitted but only after asking this really important question as to how many done. Also had local anaesthetic which does help
Very light spotting on odd months that is all, great!

Goldrill · 24/06/2013 22:04

Am on my third and they are wonderful! Got the first fitted pre-dc and it was deeply unpleasant - tbh I would choose a general anaesthetic if I had to have that done again. Second and third after the dcs I didn't even notice and was quite surprised when the doc said it was in!
No side effects, no periods. Spot on.
