To wonder why people do this because it disturbs me?

On holiday in Portugal there was a family with three gorgeous boys ages approx 12 - 7.

Dressed identically for the entire week.

Why do people do this? Does it not stifle the children creating their own identity?

More importantly what happens when soneone spills something/needs to change?

Does everyone then have to change? Confused

That is disturbing. I feel sorry for the youngest. He's going to be wearing those outfits for years!

SisterMatic · 24/06/2013 00:02

Like castaway [snorts] NotYo

Gossipmonster · 24/06/2013 00:03

No because when the eldest cam no longer wear it surely he can't either as they won't match?

WafflyVersatile · 24/06/2013 00:04

even if you buy them the same clothes for convenience they don't have to be wearing them all the same day.

My mum used to buy me and my sister some of the same clothes but in different colours.

I can't imagine 13 year olds being very impressed with having to wear the same as their 7 year old brother or sister.

Startail · 24/06/2013 00:06

I've deliberately bought the DDs identical bright coloured airport outfits.

DD1 wanders of in a dream, DD2 has more sense and tends to keep us and DD1 in sight, but she was very young.

With luck any adult spotting either of them wandering about might at least pair them up, even if DD2 had lost us.

DD1 doesn't panic, DD2 does so pairing them up even if parents are still AWOL is a good move.

I think it's intense parenting.

It made me feel tired thinking about the coordination of it.

I have always dressed my two matching when we go somewhere 'busy' like theme park etc. If the worst happens and one goes missing, I won't have to think, I can just say "he looks like this". Sorry if that offends!

whethergirl · 24/06/2013 00:17

My mum did this to me and my sister and there are 6 years between us ffs. Unforgiveable.

No-one needs to wear matching outfits, even less so for twins, don't they match enough?

Weird and creepy imo.

Gossipmonster · 24/06/2013 00:19

To be fair - I am a single mum and have taken my kids all over, theme parks, foreign holidays etc and never felt the need to do this or lost a child .....

My two youngest have matching ginger hair. does that count? Grin

cerealqueen · 24/06/2013 00:28

Have 2 girls, will consider, Might stop arguments! (amongst kids that is)

BeaWheesht · 24/06/2013 00:30

Dh once dressed the kids ready for a day out , I had been to get petrol, came back and they were at the door coats on and off we went. Got to museum, took kids coats off to discover ds (5) and dd (2) were both wearing indigo jeans and BRIGHT pink cerise tops with white bits at cuffs and collar. Luckily I had spare clothes for dd but Dh didn't even see the problem, more surprisingly nor did ds who I would've expected to kick off because he hated that too anyways and he looked like a right idiot in it when stood next to his sister!

LilacPeony · 24/06/2013 00:31

StuntGirl My mum put me and my sister in matching sailor dresses too!

LilacPeony · 24/06/2013 00:33

I think NotYoMomma's elderly father sounds sweet with his 5 pairs of identical brown shorts and yellow t shirts! Grin

missingmumxox · 24/06/2013 00:37

I had twins, I never saw the point in it, twins are hard enough work without having to change 2 because 1 got dirty, the only time I have done it was at weddings because, yes it is cute and with boys you have limited choices.
I always dress my boys in the same say shorts and t-shirt, at theme parks and the like but in the opposite colours, so all blue, all orange, or 1 in blue shorts and red t-shirt other in red shorts and blue t-shirt, as they are now 8 they control their wardrobe more and interestingly tend to dress very alike, only differing in 1 item normally the t-shirt, but same fleece and jeans at school one prefers a jumper his brother a fleece.

AdoraBell · 24/06/2013 00:37

I don't know about the family you saw OP, but here in Chile you see DCs of wealthy familias dressed idénticaly so that everyone knows they don't need to use hand-me-downs because they have enough money to kit out all 5/6/7 DCs every season. Pathetic, imho.

amazingmumof6 · 24/06/2013 01:08

you mran they were wearing the same clothes every day?

now that's what I call travelling lightly!

one setvof clothing/person/week!
fucking genius! Grin

celestialsquirrels · 24/06/2013 01:17

Duchess of York did this to her daughters. 'Nuff said really.

theoldtrout01876 · 24/06/2013 02:34

Ex mil used to do this so I heard, she had 6 kids, 3 boys ,3 girls. They all had same outfits but the girls wore skirts instead of trousers Confused

She told me this when Id mentioned how she kept buying my kids matching outfits,Id asked her not to as I couldnt keep track of what belonged to who and exh used to just put anything on anyone an they were different ages and sexes plus her taste sucked

LadyLech · 24/06/2013 02:45

My two daughters actually used to insist on dressing the same.

I used to cringe whenever they did it, but they said that they wanted everyone to know that they were sisters. Personally, I thought the fact that they looked so darned alike, same hair colouring, same big ears etc... gave it away, but no, they liked to match. They still do sometimes.

So please bear a thought for us long suffering parents who have children who insist on doing this - because not only do we have to suffer the humiliation of walking round with two kids dressed the same, but everyone thinks we chose it too! It's really not fun Wink

GoshAnneGorilla · 24/06/2013 02:46

Saidar - I am so impressed by the story behind the pink flamingos. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Featherstone_(artist)

I cannot imagine our mother being able to do this with us, we'd have all kicked off to much.

aftermay · 24/06/2013 03:00

I buy the same outfits to prevent jealousy and arguments. Sometimes they wear them at the same time, sometimes they don't. Whatever makes getting out of the house easier.

Morloth · 24/06/2013 04:07

My two tend to wear the same things.

Neither of them give a damn what they are wearing, so I have tended over the years to buy DS1 white t-shirts and blue shorts.

DS2 wears DS1's hand me downs, so they are usually dressed the same.

They don't care, it means less washing loads.

Both DH and I tend to wear white shirts and black bottoms.

No-one in our house really gives a damn about clothes.

TheRealFellatio · 24/06/2013 04:49

I am AMAZED that children over the age of 10 would put up with that. Mine would have called social services.

SillyTilly123 · 24/06/2013 07:03

For the 1st time I got my 3 dds (3, 5 +9) matching dresses. Everyone I know loved it Hmm I only got them because my nana want them and paid but they do look extremely cute all matching. Wink
