to report a car parked on the pavement outside my house to the police?

A house I used to rent out is up for sale (unoccupied, board outside etc). In the last few days a bloody great 4 x 4 truck type vehicle has started to park on the pavement (all 4 wheels on the pavement, but as its a fairly wide pavement people can just about get past) directly outside the house, not blocking the driveway but totally obscuring the ground floor and my for sale board.

The first time I saw it I left a note, "Could I ask that you do not park on the pavement outside my house. Thanks". Its still there three days later - presume it must belong to one of the neighbours - don't know any as have never lived there.

I need to sell this house and having this montrous tank of a thing outside is hardly likely to endear the viewers.

Is parking on the pavement illeagal? Would reporting it to the police BU?

Is it taxed? Don't think you can realistically dictate where people park

CajaDeLaMemoria · 23/06/2013 09:24

The police may ticket it if it's obstructing the pavement but if you can get past, they probably won't.

As long as it has valid tax, there's probably not much you can do.

Justforlaughs · 23/06/2013 09:24

If it hasn't moved in 3 days I'd report it as it may have been stolen. Parking on the pavement is illegal.

Antisecco · 23/06/2013 09:25

Surely you can realistically dictate that they don't park on the pavement Cake?

BoundandRebound · 23/06/2013 09:25

It's on the pavement so illegal. Non emergency number

Take a photo of it and email it to your local community officer. Mine takes the view that if you can't get a wheelchair past it, it's an obstruction.

OwlinaTree · 23/06/2013 09:28

YAbu. You don't have a right over the pavement outsideyour house I'm afraid. Your note would have really annoyed me and probably made me leave my car there longer.

ChippingInWiredOnCoffee · 23/06/2013 09:30

They are parking on the pavement to be considerate to road users and not taking up all of the pavement to be considerate to the pavement users. You would be being a complete twat to report them.

ImTooHecsyForYourParty · 23/06/2013 09:31

Report it. It is not reasonable for a car to obstruct the pavement. The pavement is for pedestrians, not vehicles! Why should a person in a wheelchair or a parent pushing a double pushchair have to either struggle past or go into the road?

ImTooHecsyForYourParty · 23/06/2013 09:35

Should add - I have made an assumption here that since you say people can just about get past, that it is a struggle.

Purple2012 · 23/06/2013 09:35

The police can only ticket for obstruction if they witness someone unable to get past. So you wont have any luck with the police.

Sallyingforth · 23/06/2013 09:37

No question that it's illegal to park on the footpath unless there are signs permitting it.

ChunkyPickle · 23/06/2013 09:39

It's a pavement. Vehicles are not allowed on the pavement (although generally nothing will be done for a non-obstruction) - all 4 wheels up is taking the mick though.

Buddhagirl · 23/06/2013 09:51

Report to council, not police

WMittens · 23/06/2013 10:21

Only in London.

WMittens · 23/06/2013 10:22

Sallyingforth

Nope, as the HC states "should not" rather than "MUST NOT" - it is only illegal in London.

TidyDancer · 23/06/2013 11:20

DON'T report to council, it is NOT an abandoned vehicle unless it has no tax. They will refer you to the police, so cut it the middle man and go directly to them.
