To be suspicious of Lasering on fruit and Veg instead of labels?

It's been approved info here andfruit and veg will be hitting the shops with lasered barcodes and brands instead of sticky labels.

It's more environmentally friendly apparently. What I don't like is that the actual fruit has now been altered in a way...it's physical self is not pure any longer. Also, suppliers will now be able to tell where the fruit has been sold.

Why worry about that you say? Well the fact that Monsanto have patents out on a variety of vegetables worries me.

How long before this company is controlling all fruit and vegetables? And saying which countries can sell which fresh produce?

They only need to whack their laser mark on the food they "own" and that's their stamp and their trademark.

I also don't like the look of those lasered apples...you can see the flesh!

come on....stop bickering about packing trolleys and start looking at what's going IN them.

One more reason to buy fruit from an actual farmer...

StealthPolarBear · 22/06/2013 21:36

What exactly are the risks?

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 22/06/2013 21:37

Stealth did you look at the links?

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 22/06/2013 21:37

Yes I read the top one, couldn't see anything about risks, missed the other one, will go and read now :)

StealthPolarBear · 22/06/2013 21:39

wow, that's beyond my level of comprehension, at the moment, anyway
But it's mainly about GM, and food control (which I agree are huge huge issues) rather than risks of eating the lasered fruit?

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 22/06/2013 21:40

Stealth yes...I am possibly overthinking but the thought of Monsanto "owning" tomatoes or whatever worries me. Then if they can tell where they're sold then they can control who gets stuff. If one company is allowed to patent a fruit what's stopping others?

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 22/06/2013 21:41

Yes
(though I still would like to have someone spell this stuff out to me in words of one syllable. or I may re-read when I'm less drunk tired)

cardibach · 22/06/2013 21:42

I think patenting GM foods and lasering barcodes are such different issues that your OP makes little sense.

ChunkyPickle · 22/06/2013 21:42

Err - why would they know any more about where an item of fruit has been sold because it's had its barcode lasered on, rather than had a label stuck on it?

Actually I prefer lasering to labels (which surely is very little different to stamping eggs) - they get stuck all over the kitchen by lazy people.

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 22/06/2013 21:43

Are they cardi? I am here for reassurance really....I

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 22/06/2013 21:44

Chunky it says that the producer will be able to tell where it's sold...that's a very reputable site.

I don't so much mind them lasering my bananas, but I do object to lasering of fruit and veg where I'm going to eat the skin. That would make them unappealing.

Tbh, I don't see the need for sticky labels or lasering. I can tell it's an apple, thanks very much. I don't need a label. If I need more info, I will look for the information on the shelves.

tiptapkeyboard · 22/06/2013 21:44

They are going to sell bloody apples with peppa fucking pig on aren;t they?

EdwiniasRevenge · 22/06/2013 21:44

Hmm....

What has Monsanto got to do with the lasered barcodes?

There was a very interesting thread which was anti-monsanto a few weeks ago.

That op had a few different issues in the op....funny how they were all unrelated to each other!

IsotopeMe · 22/06/2013 21:44

This looks really interesting. Marking my place to learn more when my brain is not so tired!

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 22/06/2013 21:45

Chunky it's done through computers I suppose...the fruit is swiped by the till and that information then goes to a database owned by the supplier

MikeLitoris · 22/06/2013 21:45

Dp brought home a lasered apple last week the dc were amazed but we were a bit put off eating it tbh.

It just looked weird.

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 22/06/2013 21:46

tiptap and bananas with ads for McDonalds!

I just think that altering fruit from it's natural state is weird. It's fruit ffs. It's like tattooing meat and selling that.

OP posts:
cardibach · 22/06/2013 21:47

Yes Neo. The ownership of a patent is a legal matter. Barcodes can give a huge amount of information to the seller, but lasered v stuck on makes no difference whatsoever.

ChunkyPickle · 22/06/2013 21:47

But if they can do it with a laser, they can do it with the label/whatever they've got right now

There's nothing special about a barcode in a shopping system - it's just a number that says 'an apple was sold of this type' - the same thing is said as the crate of them is checked into the supermarket, and as the cashier types the code for 'pink lady' and weighs them - absolutely no difference at all

ChunkyPickle · 22/06/2013 21:49

Errr - they do use indelible dyes to mark meat - where it came from, that it's suitable for human consumption etc. - Just look at the edge of your danish bacon, or a leg of pork at the butcher

cardibach · 22/06/2013 21:49

Can the barcodes be washed off? If not I think they may be a non-starter as consumers won't buy.

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 22/06/2013 21:49

Chunky labels aren't as reliable though as they can come off or be swapped so they would not gather the info that way.
