to expect dcs 8 & 10 to put away their own clothes?

I've washed them, dried them, sorted them, folded and/or ironed them, placed them in a pile in their rooms. And there they will sit until dd 10 and ds 8 complain they can't find item x or y, and I will drop whatever I am doing to go and look for it, only to have to point out that the missing item of clothing is clean and dry and under their very nose if only they looked, and would be a lot easier to find if they'd put it away. The kids then look at me as if I have horns!

My 10 can. My 8 year old twins are useless. Find clothes stuffed in random places.

I think this is the relevant sentence - I will drop whatever I am doing to go and look for it. Stop doing that.

My children tend to view the floor as an extension to their wardrobe. As long as the dirty stuff goes in the laundry basket, and the clean stuff doesn't get put in the laundry basket, I don't mind.

Occasionally I announce that am going to hoover, and anything found on the floor will either get binned or hoovered, so they tidy.

I make my ten and eight year olds.
I do my six year olds with her normally though she has done it on her own. I do our four year olds at the moment.
I do fold it all in piles of each item though so its quick and easy.

I pile up stuff downstairs and tell them that treat xyz will not happen until clothes are taken upstairs and put away.

I have also taken time to explain that I (or DH) do the washing, drying and ironing so it's not like they even have the hardest bits to do (DC are 9 and 7).

i have just started my 8 and 9yr old dds on putting their laundry away. Each of them has a pile left on their beds and are presented with a pile of hangers, takes them ten mins to do. Its funny how tidy the bottom of their wardrobes are since they have had to do it themselves.

My 4 yr old dd just has to help me sort her clothes into trousers, tops etc 4 me to hang and put her pants etc away.
