To teach my DD to say ta?

Instead of thank you. DD is fifteen months old and can say words now. She can say please, of sorts, when she feels like it. I don't like the word ta much myself, but I would rather she said that than nothing. Or should I just try to use thank you from the start.

I'm from oop north, but live in the sarf now, so maybe I should use ta! Before I know it DD will be mispronouncing the likes of grass, castle, glass and master Wink.

Im amazed that someone finds a babys attempt at saying thank you by saying 'ta' as vile. Shame on you woman!

Kasterborous · 20/06/2013 21:30

She calls all dogs Molly as that is our dogs name.

I would go for thank you, so what if it comes out "tan two" for a while. As long as you're not *wandadoff" DS it's fine Grin

TwasBrillig · 20/06/2013 21:31

I really really dont like "ta", partly as I never hear adults say it here (south) so it is a bit of a meaningless word to teach them as there is no context. I've never really understood teaching a random word they wont hear said anywhere else then teaching the real one, although this would be different obviously in an area where its usually spoken!

We do do animal sounds alongside animal names but that makes sense to me!

ThoughtsPlease · 20/06/2013 21:31

password exactly I really don't understand why you don't just teach the correct words, my DS 13 months can say really very clearly, the 2 syllable 'Alex' one of my DDs names why does he need to be taught the one syllable ta rather than trying thank you?

bubbatime · 20/06/2013 21:34

I know a lady who was quite particular about teaching her dc to say thank you instead of ta. She was somewhat dismayed to hear her dc attempt 'fack you' sound quite rude! Smile

MalenkyRusskyDrakonchik · 20/06/2013 21:36
Confused

I had no clue people didn't like ta. Never thought it was short for anything either.

It's just a dialect work for thanks. Confused

MILdesperandum · 20/06/2013 21:36

DD said "ta thank you" except it sounded like "tah - goo-goo" this worked fine since if she'd just said goo-goo she might not have been understood. Goo-goo quickly developed into thank-you so no problems!

bellybuttonfairy · 20/06/2013 21:39

Ta can be said so much earlier than thank you. Babies love to interact and using early words that can engage them in interactions is absolutely lovely. It so qiickly progresses to thank you (unless parents use ta regularly, which is absolutely no problem - we all dont just live in the south).

So, if your child says 'nana' whilst pointing to a banana. Do you give it to them with a smile or do you insist they say banana?

ThoughtsPlease · 20/06/2013 21:43

belly for me anyway, if thank you for some reason came out as ta, then the response would just be 'that's right thank you', just like I would say 'yes banana' in your example.

But I wouldn't teach 'nana' instead of 'banana'. And I wouldn't teach ta, you can still interact from hearing however thank you comes out as.

HerrenaHarridan · 20/06/2013 21:46

Another ta hater ( personal choice)
Dd signs please and the sign is the same for thank you so thus not and option but to my ears "ank oo" is very cute Smile

ThoughtsPlease · 20/06/2013 21:46

Perhaps I'm being dense, but how is the sound ta short for thank you in the way that nana might be said for banana.

Kooza · 20/06/2013 21:48

I'm just wondering when the "Correct Terminology for Toddlers" police will arrive and shunt this into the good old "Vulva vs. Foofoo" debate...

topknob · 20/06/2013 21:54

I can't stand Ta at all, my parents tried to install it on dc's but I always replaced it with thank you. Ta is just yuck !

arethereanyleftatall · 20/06/2013 21:54

Like others my dds first words we're 'fuck you' spoken very clearly.

bellybuttonfairy · 20/06/2013 21:55

I never say ta but all my 3 have said it in their early years, its just seems to come out as an abbreviation. Ive never disvouraged it but have been encouraging at their attempts to say thank you and saying ta to start with has been part of that.

I just feel sorry for all these little toddlers trying to say thank you in their own immature way and having dissaproving looks and curled toes from adults. Its just a shame.

pooka · 20/06/2013 21:56

I don't like ta, but up to you.

I'd just say thank you and wait for her to pick it up, rather than teach an 'interim' word, if that's how you see it as being.

CreatureRetorts · 20/06/2013 21:57

My dd says "tak - ooo" for thank you. She's 18 months. I didn't bother with ta for either of mine, no need!

CreatureRetorts · 20/06/2013 21:58

But saying that, I say ta myself Grin common

RazzleDazzleEm · 20/06/2013 22:54

oh my goodness is this why people say "ta"!! I could never understand it!

I loathe it, I would never ever teach them to say this.

Just teach thank you.

RazzleDazzleEm · 20/06/2013 22:55

Fairy I have never ever ever heard a toddler say ta who wasnt being taught by nanna.

ThoughtsPlease · 20/06/2013 22:58

Razzle nearly wet my pants! Grin

jamdonut · 21/06/2013 08:20

Why is Ta perceived as "Yuck" or "loathesome" ,though?Hmm

thebitchdoctor · 21/06/2013 09:48

Jamdonut because some people are word snobs.
