that has an expiry as of yesterday?

I thought s.salmon goes on forever? I only bought this on Sunday!

I'd like to make some fishcakes... Grin

If it smells ok and tastes ok... smoking is a preservative, and dates are cautious estimates.

VBisme · 20/06/2013 10:11

Yep if it smells okay.

Feminine · 20/06/2013 10:11

exactly thecat :) I've always just slung it in the fridge , and used it as and when. Normally really looong expiry dates.

I'm feeding the fish cakes to the children , and you know...I wondered.

Tip for the future

You can freeze smoked salmon too, it freezes well.

Feminine · 20/06/2013 10:18

Oh thanks chaz :)

Just check it doesn't smell fishy..... Grin

Buzzardbird · 20/06/2013 10:23

You would have thought that thecat would have suggested giving it to thecat?

Feminine · 20/06/2013 11:00

Its hard. I have a crazy imagination. my special nose is detecting all kinds of extra smells in it MN

I'll freeze it next time, that was good advice.

Thanks all.

If in doubt, chuck it out.

It's better than chucking it up.

loveliesbleeding1 · 20/06/2013 11:05

Feel the salmon, if it feels slimy, dont use it

motheroftwoboys · 20/06/2013 12:57

personally I totally ignore sell by/use by dates. They infuriate me. Just rely on taste and smell in the old fashioned way. so much perfectly useable food is thrown away because of this.

imademarion · 20/06/2013 13:31

Yes I would use it; always had a cavalier approach up expiry dates and yet to be ill.

Also, isn't smoking a preservative?

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 20/06/2013 13:35

It will be fine, eat it.

Startail · 20/06/2013 13:39

It will be fine and doubly fine cooked in fish cakes.

The almost three week out of date bacon in my fridge I'm more worried about. It's posh stuff and I don't really want to chuck it, but it's pushing it even for me.

WilsonFrickett · 20/06/2013 13:40

You can freeze bacon too

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/06/2013 14:45

If you are cooking it then, you know, you are cooking it. Short of botulism, you will be fine. I rely on my nose as well. It really makes my North American DH twitchy.

One year the cat got to the turkey. MIL, DM and I were all for cutting off the chewed limb and cooking it really well the turkey, not the chewed limb. DH went out on CHRISTMAS DAY and bought another turkey for stupid money. Bless.

Feminine · 20/06/2013 14:59

Thanks for the latest responses all. I will make them Wink

Have just eaten the bacon, it tasted fine.

Feminine · 21/06/2013 09:29

Grin well done star

Startail · 21/06/2013 10:08

No ill effects reported from the bacon by two DDs or myself.

I didn't leave it hanging about to be reheated by DH, that seemed pushing our luck.

Also he loves cheese on his baked potatoes, so he is very easy to feed.

Feminine · 21/06/2013 11:33

the fish cakes were yummy too Wink

I think in future though, I'll buy it from Ldyll (sp) there is way more and lasts forever!

Startail · 21/06/2013 11:43

DD1 and me will be investigating!

Feminine · 21/06/2013 12:54
