Osteopath

I'm 35 weeks pg and been suffering since 20 weeks with spd/pgp which has got progressively worse. This is ds2 - I work 4 days a week but have worked from home for last three weeks to manage pain.

New pain started a week ago. Bump has dropped and now sending spasms through pelvis. In desperation yesterday I booked an osteo appt and went tonight.

Came home and DH went off on one saying it was a waste of £40 and believes I'll be in pain regardless for the next 5 weeks. He's super stressed about money as our income will obvs be dropping significantly when I stop work.

I'm just Hmm. In constant pain and am desperate to try and ease my next 5 weeks. But now I don't want to return for more as I can't be arsed with DH's moaning.

Does anyone think osteo is worth it?? Am I just wasting money we don't have?

I was in agony with SPD when pregnant with dd. after just two visits to the osteopath I felt like a new women. I can't recommend it enough.

QuietNinjaTardis · 19/06/2013 19:52

My spd was gradually getting worse again after ds was born. When he was 3 months old finally had the bright idea to go to an osteo. My spd was gone after 3 sessions. Money well spent and as I am pregnant again will be going at the first twinge I get so it doesn't get as bad as it did with ds.

EglantinePrice · 19/06/2013 19:54

Can I ask roughly what area you live in? May have a recommendation.

As for you DH... What a miserable bastard. Let him be in constant pain and then we'll see what he'd pay to ease it.

If you've picked a good osteopath, they will let you know if they can't help you. I love my osteopath but she had little impact on my slipped disc during pregnancy and she advised not to waste my money at that time, I was in so much pain I would have kept throwing money at it with even the slimmest hope of some relief. However, it can help with SPD in some cases. Good luck and I hope it gives you some relief.

EglantinePrice · 19/06/2013 20:11

Sorry, nowhere near. But get a recommendation if you can.

QuietNinjaTardis · 19/06/2013 20:14

Littlemilla, I'm bristol too and when I was pregnant I went to the family practice on Gloucester road. Will be going back if the spd starts again this time.

Dexidoo · 19/06/2013 20:19

I'm 31 weeks and have seen an osteopath twice since pelvic pain started around 10 weeks ago, it has really helped.

I'd definitely recommend it

LittleMilla · 19/06/2013 20:23

Quiet - that's where I went!

Ok, I'm going to see how I feel tomorrow and go to the appt on Monday. I'll then book a third based on how I feel after that.

She said that I shouldn't have let it get so bad (I've been 'putting up' with it for fear of spending the cash tbh). But felt sure she'd be able to make me more comfortable.

When I was pregnant, I woke up in agony one morning with some sort of hip/back/arse issue. I went to my GP who put me on a waiting list for physio and suggested paracetamol. It was so painful that DH had to help me to get out of bed to go to the loo. In desperation I went to an osteopath. He gave me what would best be described as a buttock massage. Within 2 days I was fine again. The massage used by my osteopath is similar to the massage I have since has from a physio for a sciatica (when not pregnant). While osteopathy sounds like a "woo" treatment by virtue of not being offered on the NHS and sounding a bit like "homeopathy", I think it is actually pretty main stream and definitely worked for me and I am a real sceptic.

LittleMilla · 19/06/2013 21:51

Spoken to DH and shared everyone's experience. Agreed to give it three sessions and if I'm not feeling better then I'll leave it I think. Not sure how much worse it can really get in the next month and I've managed this far.

My mum is forever nagging me for being too much of a 'coper'. She says that it makes it nigh on impossible to ever buckle as people's expectations are that you'll always be fine Hmm. So true.

OP I have used osteo extensively for sports injuries and my experience is that after the 1st session you can have a 'treatment reaction' and actually feel worse for a day or to, before the second session sorts it out. So ont give up if that happens!

OP the House Clinic in Redland often does deals for a first session/consultation at a cheaper price. Why not call and see what they can do? I think Leiza Allpass is the preg specialist there.

Alternatively just call your current practice and be frank - you'd like more sessions but can't afford full price. If you book and pay for 2 or 3 at once can they do a deal?

maternitart · 20/06/2013 09:33

Sorry just to add - Leiza is hands on does adjustments type. Combo of chiropractor and more holistic treatments.

Just be warned I've found most places try to give you the hard sell for loads of ongoing sessions!

TooOldForGlitter · 20/06/2013 09:41

If you are able to get to Cardiff I have a recommendation. He massively improved my OHs slipped discs and sciatica in two sessions.

LittleMilla · 20/06/2013 09:44

Thanks for all the recommendations. I am going to see the lady on Monday am and explain that I can only afford three sessions. I should've been more explicit yesterday and explain the reason that I hadn't come sooner was because I was worried about the money.

IME osteopaths are well worth the money spent but the results may not be instant.
must stress that is osteopath not chiropractor who are often charlatans.

Panzee · 20/06/2013 09:45

If your osteo is like mine it'll only take one session. Good luck. :)

QuietNinjaTardis · 20/06/2013 12:01

Yes tell them litlemilla cos they may be able to help you out if you need more sessions.
