To leave DD 'moaning' in her cot every nap time?

Every time I put 8 month old DD down for a sleep, even when she falls asleep as I'm feeding her beforehand, she will do a quiet, grizzly moan for at least 30 minutes if not more, before she eventually goes to sleep.

It is very rare that she'll go down and not do this, she's doing it now and I'm feeling really mean. I KNOW she's tired as she was playing on her front and kept putting her head down and she was also rubbing her eyes and if I go to get her she looks so tired.

She naps twice a day for about half an hour but I'm thinking of stopping one of them because of this.

It's not controlled crying or anything as there's no real crying, just a moan in all senses of the word. She also sometimes chats to herself before the 'moan' starts. AIBU to keep doing it? She's not distressed, I am more than her! Does anyone else have this with their DCs?

Ah, sounds like she's just nodded of after 45 mins!

If leave her. She's moaning, not crying, and as you say, she's not upset. Has this been happening for a while? Is the grizzling getting shorter/longer?

Could she last a little longer before you put her down?

Quiet time can be as valuable as actual sleep time.

I suspect I'm about to get slammed to being a mean mum!

I would, sadly my dd screams like a banshee until she vomits. Moaning wouldn't register...

BibbityBotBot · 18/06/2013 10:51

Yanbu. All my children have done this to some degree. Leave her as long as she's not upset.

1Veryhungrycaterpillar · 18/06/2013 11:07

Maybe that's just something she needs to do to drop off, if she's not crying I'd leave her

minibmw2010 · 18/06/2013 12:06

It just sounds to me like she's figuring out how to self settle. My DS regularly used to chat to himself for a few minutes and then he'd drop off. They all make different sounds. If you know she's tired and she needs to sleep then leave her be.

valiumredhead · 18/06/2013 12:35

Ds ALWAYS needed a short cry and a little grizzle before nodding off.

Summerblaze · 18/06/2013 12:49

All 3 of mine did the grizzle to sleep thing. Its normal and usually is just a phase anyway.

HavingAnOffDAy · 18/06/2013 12:53

I could just be her way of settling herself, like you reading a book/turning onto a certain side crashing as soon as your head hits the pillow etc

As long as she's not upset then definitely leave her!

YANBU my dd was the same, sent herself off to sleep this way until about age 2. Sounds like everything is fine.

VisualiseAHorse · 18/06/2013 13:36

YANBU - my 14 month old will moan for about 15 minutes sometimes, and sometimes moans when waking for another 20 minutes, then he'll fall asleep again.

The moaning may just be a 'light sleep'.

Fakebook · 18/06/2013 13:42

My DS used to grizzle and moan before sleeping when he was a newborn. Then he went through a stage of nodding off whilst crawling around the room. Now he has a big cry has a snuggle for comfort and then sleeps with his security cloth whilst sucking his thumb.

I'd leave her to it. It's probably her way of getting ready for bed.

DontWannaBeObamasElf · 18/06/2013 13:56

My 7 month old moans terribly. I leave her and only go to her when she's dropped pulled out her dummy and when she cries. I hope it is a phase!

VulvaVoom · 18/06/2013 15:14

Thanks so much, I feel better now. Incidentally, I put her down for her sleep this afternoon and she was out like a light Confused

It definitely is a moan/grizzle and as a few of you have said, I think it's kind of her 'routine' before sleep.

Just got to try and leave her when she wakes and does it at night now as I'm sure it's just a annoying and very tiring habit
