If you take your child out of school regularly during term time for holidays (at least twice per year, but 3 times this year), you don't really have grounds to complain that the school is not teaching your son to read properly.
I'd like to have cheaper holidays or a holiday abroad but I'd like my son to partake in all available lessons more.
Am I just being a moany old fart?

Nope. Is it two weeks every time? Which would come to six weeks, which would be a whole half term's worth.

I have been known to take DS out of school for holidays (only one a year though) but whilst he is in school I expect him to be taught properly.

It depends.......are the school failing and if so then yes, of course she can complain.

Yeah, a bit of a moany old fart...sorry :)

Well I think either parents should stop taking their children out of school unless said child is doing well across the board OR teachers should just stay at the school 24 hrs a day so that parents can bring their kids in just whenever they feel like it to learn silly things like reading n writing n that. Its not like you ever actually have to use these things after school innit?

Buzzardbird · 17/06/2013 16:14

Grin @ Coca. Some people amaze me.

livinginwonderland · 17/06/2013 16:15

Well, how long is he being taken out for? A couple of days each time won't make much difference, but if it's two weeks, then obviously it's going to have much more of an impact.

I could read before I started school, but I went on holidays early every year pretty much - we have family in Australia and missing the last two days of term meant a HUGE saving in flight prices. I got through school just fine and I never had any problems because I missed work.

MildlyMiserable · 17/06/2013 16:20

Generally 7-10 day breaks, this term it's this week, back for a few days then another week.
I don't believe the school is failing the child, the Mum complained the child wasn't being taught to read properly (he's being taught the same way as the rest of the class), I understand that children learn at different rates and some need extra tuition. The extra tuition has been put in place and the teacher is twiddling her thumbs because the child is on holiday and not in class. A waste of school funds.

yanbu. That sounds like pisstake level.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 17/06/2013 16:31

Well if the school are teaching him properly then she needs to be doing some extra stuff at home for him to catch up!

Buzzardbird · 17/06/2013 16:52

And it's phonics test this week so I am presuming he isn't yr1?

CocacolaMum · 17/06/2013 16:57

why did the school authorise this leave?

livinginwonderland · 17/06/2013 16:58

If it's that long every time, then YANBU. That's just a pisstake. If she's so concerned, she should teach him at home.

Crinkle77 · 17/06/2013 17:27

Surely it is also up to the parents to help with reading and not just the school.

BridgetBidet · 17/06/2013 19:16

I think they're taking the piss with holidays. But also I think that it is completely possible that there are genuine problems with the way he's being taught too And if that's the case I don't see why that shouldn't be dealt with. If it's 2-3 weeks out of school a year it's not ideal but it also shouldn't be bad enough to leave him illiterate.

MildlyMiserable · 17/06/2013 23:28

The school doesn't authorise the absences, she phones and leaves sick messages on the out of hours office line.
The school have questioned her on the absences, she asked what they wanted her to do if her son was sick, remember she has left the messages so in her head her argument is valid! Brass necked!
