In September we will be moving to near Brighton (can't afford actual Brighton unfortunately) and I was getting quite excited about Worthing until we went to visit today... it just felt a bit run down and I couldn't see what we would do there - no independent cinema, not much by way of watersports and stupid things like we couldn't find a naice cafe in west worthing (where we were house-hunting)

So, can you tell me if IABU and we stupidly missed the great bits or if I am looking at the wrong town??

Worthing beach is nicer than Brighton - not nearly so crowded. Its got more clubs and pubs than a few years ago, and the schools are better than Brighton. Dome cinema is fabulous. Sailing club in Shoreham. Shoreham is great, and is a good half way house between Brighton and Worthing.

'No independent cinema' google the Dome. Think it's the oldest in the country.

Worthing is ghastly. Have a look at Seaford - completely the opposite direction but a nice place. Or Littlehampton. Or Lancing. Or anywhere that's not Worthing!

Worthing is horrible. Just horrible.
I grew up there, it was a shithole, nothing good about it and I've had many more threats and physical violence happen to me there than in my "ropey" bit of London where I live now. There's no sense of community, no-one cares, policing is crap, hospital is disgusting.

Look at Telescombe Cliffs, Saltdean or Peacehaven. They have bugger all there but you will be much closer to Brighton (which is a complete dump IMO) :)

Where are you moving from? I moved from London to the South Coast 12 years ago and hated it for at least 3 years. It takes a while to get used to the 'locals' Grin

Nearly as a good a slogan as "Don't Talk Hastings Down", which was in all the shops and cafes in Hastings when we visited about 15 years ago

I don't like Brighton.

Southend is better than Brighton

We have relatives in Worthing. I can't imagine anyone feeling excited about living there. Nothing happens there - and that's how its residents like it so any attempt to make anything happen will not be welcomed.

There aren't naice cafe's generally because most people just bring a tartan thermos of tea from home anyway.

The residents of West Worthing tend to do their shopping in Durrington because the hustle and bustle of Worthing centre is too busy for them. Try not to laugh when they say this, they've not seen Oxford Street. Being able to see more than 10 people you don't know IS massively crowded.

There is a nice-ish cafe in Durrington, but not "naice". There was a lovely chocolaterie which openned up there a couple of years ago which made me hopeful that the area would become livable - but it closed again within 12 months for lack of business - I think I may have been their only customer. Our relatives were shocked when I bought easter chocs for DH from there instead of getting the mass-produced cheap stuff that was on special offer further up the road.

Worthing is nice!

No, it's not like Brighton but nowhere else is!

Look at Shoreham if you want naice tea shops and stuff. The bonus of Shoreham is it's sandwiched nicely between the Downs and the Sea, and you have a lovely river.

If I had the money, I'd live on Shoreham Beach!

I wouldn't move to Worthing. I found it depressing.

Hove Lagoon is just down the road and has water sports.

I remember visiting Worthing prior to moving down here and we actually went home early because we were bored!

I love it now. There are lots of lovely family events, like fireworks on the beach. The bird man event is hilarious and everyone gathers to watch.

Coast cafe is lovely maybe not the other word you used (I can't bear to repeat it)

You are wrong about the cinema, google The Dome, and see the cafe next door.

Think about what else is on your doorstep, and easily accessible rather than focusing just on Worthing.

Come over towards Chichester - much nicer!
However, one of my friends lives in Worthing and when the DCs were much younger I used to go over there a lot. There was a surprising amount going on. You don't always see these places from the outside.
I've done some supply teaching in some East Worthing schools. I wouldn't do it again unless I was starving. There are some quite deprived areas there.

I second shoreham, its great, wouldn't move back to brighton if you paid me. Having said that anywhere along the south coast has got to ne better than London.

Shoreham is just as expensive as Brighton. We couldn't afford it when we looked, hence why we are now in Sompting. I moved here from Islington and I love it.

Hmm some harsh opinions if worthing on here! I grew up there and still have family there so go regularly.

No independent cinemas?! There are 2, the Connaught and Dome, there are actually no chains.

Yes it has a high older population but so do most coastal towns - there is also lots of families, parks, events, good schools, lovely beach and a brand new swimming pool.

Saying that I now live in Hove....

Really dislike Worthing. Hospital is dirty too.
If you think Chi is conservative don't come to Horsham!

Worthing is a dump.

Someone else suggested Hangleton: don't do it. Hangleton is what death is like.

Isn't Shoreham meant to be the swinging capital of the South East or something? Nice place though, and a really good live music scene (if that's your cup of tea)

Lewes is fab, but if you can't afford Brighton, you probably can't afford Lewes either (though I am not well off and manage to live here quite comfortabley). Ringmer is nice, and close enough to benefit from Lewes's Lewesishness - but still no watersports!
