So been visiting family this week, was due to do a 2.5 hour drive back home, but came down with a stinking cold over night, had an awful nights sleep and felt rotten when I woke up this morning. I also had an informal meeting with a potential employer this afternoon but couldn't bring myself to do the drive home as my head is all bunged up, and have had that weird floaty feeling. Reckon I've lost my chances with the new job? I called this morning and explained I am visiting family (which I am) and my mum is unwell (which is also true) so I am unsure when I'll be home over the weekend. I didn't want to say I was unwell, and get a bad rapport before I even start or meet them. I feel absolutely awful that I didn't go but I have given them a few hours notice. Am I being stupid? Sad

Yes. You were being stupid.

NotYoMomma · 14/06/2013 18:43

I would have thought illness was actually a preferential reason over visiting family tbh

QuintessentialOldDear · 14/06/2013 18:45

Yes.
Because you did not take the job seriously. Instead of coming to see them, you were visiting family.

Antisecco · 14/06/2013 18:49

Write out 100 times:

to HAVE given driving home a miss.

In answer to your question, ywprobablynbu to stay where you were but why on earth did you give them that wet nelly reason rather than the truth?

K8eee · 14/06/2013 18:50

I got a phone call two days ago whilst I have been with family and dh agreed the time etc...

does your work involve producing any written material?

Tee2072 · 14/06/2013 18:53

And as soon as you got that call you should have figured out the best way to get home so you could go.

A cold is a ridiculous reason.

Especially in this economy.

Antisecco · 14/06/2013 18:54

Grin Polar

StealthPolarBear · 14/06/2013 18:57

I wasn't being flippant or facetious. I genuinely would like to know.

StealthPolarBear · 14/06/2013 18:58

And I have no idea how to spell facetious for the record

Antisecco · 14/06/2013 19:01

That's how you spell it Polar but now I am truly disappointed! Why do you genuinely want to know

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 14/06/2013 19:01

YABU to tell half truths. YANBU to not drive when not feeling 100% up to it. Was there no other way to get home?

Salmotrutta · 14/06/2013 19:01

You spelled it correctly.

A cold OP?

Wow.

K8eee · 14/06/2013 19:04

I can understand its a bit stupid to do half truths but I know they won't find out and don't want them to think the whole illness thing would affect my employment. Tbh the symptoms have been awful; stuffy head, sore skin & joints and full on snot. I didn't have any other way of getting home no.

Sorry, I'm derailing the thread, and actually being rather rude to the OP. It's just that nothing about her strikes me as professional, but in actual fact what she does may not require any grasp of grammar or spelling. In which case I'm just a judgey cah.

Antisecco · 14/06/2013 19:08

Gotcha Polar. And a fair point!

Antisecco · 14/06/2013 19:08

And a fair point!

About grammar and spelling not necessarily being the hot issue, I mean!
