I am sure hormones effect moods - yanbu - I am sorry you are feeling low x

schooldidi · 12/06/2013 23:35

I am convinced that hormones affect my mood.

Have you spoken to your gp?

ShabbyButNotChic · 12/06/2013 23:36

100%!!! Im on meds anyway but always feel more anxious/down 2-3 days before, then start my period and make the connection..think i would have realised by now!

Nicknamegrief · 12/06/2013 23:38

My sister has clinical depression, her meds are on a cycle to match her cycle. She takes a higher dose in the lead up to her period. I presume her GP believe that hormone cycle affects her depression. I certainly do!

DramaAlpaca · 12/06/2013 23:40

Hormones definitely affect my mood - YANBU.

Doubtfuldaphne · 12/06/2013 23:52

I don't think I have depression but straight after the monthly curse I am so so ill for a week after
I can hardly get out of bed and have headaches and I am hell to be around. I couldn't even make it to the shops last week due to it. I always assumed its my iron levels but hormones must play a big part.
Horrible isn't it?

Elquota · 12/06/2013 23:55

YANBU. The pill can cause depression in some people, so it would make sense that hormones can have an effect.

MamaChubbyLegs · 13/06/2013 00:03

doubtful have you had your iron levels checked? My hb halved while pregnant and during birth (messy) and I was really ill. Now I feel like you do every period. Am on iron for 6 months.

In response to the OP, I absolutely definitely am affected by periods. I used to go on St John's Wort for a week before hand and that helped.

Was on prozac before but that sent me loopy I know someone who is on it because of how she gets around period time, and it works wonders for her.

IneedAyoniNickname · 13/06/2013 00:14

Yanbu.

Studies have found that people with depression tend to have higher levels of cortisol (a stress hormone) - this is particularly higher in women.
Also low seratonin levels.
So fluctuation in these hormones (which afaik could be caused by your monthly cycle) could affect depression.

SirBoobAlot · 13/06/2013 00:36

My first indicator that I'm pre-menstrual is that I'm filled with murderous rage and become suicidally depressed. It's kind of a helpful indicator, seeing as I have PCOS as my periods just turn up when they fancy.

Do sspeak to your GP if it's affecting you so seriously.

redexpat · 13/06/2013 08:01

I know that when I started using hormone based contraception I didn't swing so much, and haven't been as despressed, but I don't know if the two are connected.

Doubtfuldaphne · 13/06/2013 08:43

I've always had low iron but it goes just o. The cusp of ok whenever I have it checked. I've just got some spatone to have every day but it er... Clogs me up!

mrsjay · 13/06/2013 09:25

PMS is an awful thing to cope with and if you have depression ontop of that then of course it may to be worse Sad there has been countless threads on here about hormones and a lot of us don't just feel a bit grumpy we really suffer with very low mood,

FarBetterNow · 13/06/2013 09:36

A natural remedy for low iron levels is a large teaspoonful of blackstrap molasses (available in health food shops) twice a day.
Either eat it neat, then have a hot drink or dissolve in warm water and drink it.
It is very yummy, tastes like treacle, but probably not good for diabetics as it has high sugar levels.

But it doesn't clog up your bowels.

glitternanny · 13/06/2013 09:40
