So, I am virtually tone-deaf and cannot sing a note (although I love listening to music). I have never in my life been able to recognise a bird song.

A couple of weeks ago I was gardening and heard a bird singing - couldnt see it, but the thought came into my head that it was singing "What you doing? What you doing?" over and over again. Thought it was quite sweet at the time.

However it is now driving me bloody insane!!! Every time I step out the sodding thing is nagging me and I am beginning to think about importing tigers or something...

Is it actually in your garden or in your head?

Sounds a bit like a Great Tit. They are sometimes called the teacher bird because their song goes "tea-cher tea-cher, tea-cher". It is very high pitched and loud.

We have one that sings very loudly just outside the bedroom window at 4.30am. I like bird song but I could happily strangle it at that time! Also because the darn thing has nested and got chicks in a plain old bird box and has totally ignored my Springwatch style camera nest box on the next branch.

That reminds me of when ds1 was little, and we were trying to find out what the bird was that said BIG WHEEL, BIG WHEEL

When i walk the dog there is a bird which sits in the same tree each day singing roo-beet roo-beet over and over. I shout it back every time. People would think i was mad if they heard me but at 5.30 am there is no-one to hear me.

haha I know what you mean.... we've been looking forward to hearing the cuckoo for ages - and now I know why the saying is 'driving you cuckoo'.

I also have always thought the wood pigeons are telling me 'your dinner's ready.... your dinner's ready'

not sure DoJo as cant make it play... but judging by the accompanying map it seems unlikely! (Jaipur a long way from SE England Grin)

I'm glad it's not just me, I thought it was so sweet at first and now I am thinking of putting it in a pie!

More years ago than I care to remember (OK, about 25 years ago) a friend's DS (then about 3 years old) had a popple cuddly toy if anyone remembers those, imaginatively called Popple. He would pretend that Popple's tail was hurt, and sit crooning 'my tail hurts, Popple, my tail hurts, Popple' endlessly. The way he did it was sing-song-y with an emphasis on the word tail, and one day I heard a wood pigeon cooing, and started singing along, 'my tail hurts, Popple, my tail hurts, Popple'. To this day, whenever I hear a woodpigeon, that's what I think it's saying. Aaaaargh.
