AIBU to think if there is empty seats on a bus you should go and sit in them rather than standing at the front of the bus?

...and making it more complicated than it should be to get off the bus?

I see your point Arabesque but I would have thought it would be precisely during the taking off/putting on manoeuvres that bumping was likely to happen.

Right I'm off to the life shop.

KellyElly · 12/06/2013 11:05

People standing with big backpacks on their back are a PITA. Bain of my life on the tube as well. They should be banned Grin

DoctorRobert · 12/06/2013 11:06

I appreciate that it might be a dreadful PITA for somebody with a backpack to have to go to all the trouble of taking it off just so that they can sit down.

However I don't see why I have to spend my journey feeling anxious that they are going to hurt my child.

Arabesque · 12/06/2013 11:06

It should be taken off before they board the bus.

By the way, why do people bother to open and post on threads that they obviously think are on subjects far too trivial for them to bother about? I can never understand that.

Antisecco · 12/06/2013 11:13

Give me strength...there is such a thing as being light hearted. And I was having a pop at myself for being so ernest, and detailed not at anyone else! My whole life is based on trivia...

Oh well I've beeon on thsi forum man and boy for years now and it's the first time anyone has thrown that one at me...I have my
'If you don't like it piss off' badge. Yipppeeeee! Wink

OTTMummA · 12/06/2013 11:16

DoctorRobert can't you put the pushchair the other way round, facing the window? Confused

I have to use crutches if I am on the bus alone ( use pushchair for support on other days ) I find it quite painful to sit down, especially on those flip down seats, I have nothing to hold on to and end up in more pain, so I stand.

There is also a man with CP locally who has to stand on the bus, good thing he does as he occasionally pisses himself.

I don't mind where people want to stand tbh, if they are in the way you just ask them to move politely, it isn't hard.

Arabesque · 12/06/2013 11:23

You're welcome Antisecco.

Antisecco · 12/06/2013 11:25

[grin} Arabesque

Antisecco · 12/06/2013 11:25

That should of course be Grin Arabesque

Keztrel · 12/06/2013 11:27

No, I like it when people stay standing, it means those of us doing a longer journey (as I do most days) can wriggle to the back and settle down in a seat. I have an irrational hatred of having to stand on a bus. It makes me feel like a second class citizen. When I have a seat and others are standing I feel all smug Grin (joke kind of)

Antisecco · 12/06/2013 11:33

And since I have your attention Arabesque could I say that I was VERY active (under a different name) on your thread in April about a weekend away and no one was more delighted than I was at how well it ended for you all.

this is not a thread about a thread it is merely a hijack detour of the current thread!

Yonirubbishnamesleft · 12/06/2013 11:34

I just like getting in the way.

KatoPotato · 12/06/2013 11:39

One time I got on to a packed bus and stood next a really frail looking old man swaying about and clinging on.

I took the rage and said loudly, would you like me to go and ask someone to get up and let you have a seat sir?'

'Och no hen, they've ll offered and I've told them I can't sit down or I won't be able to get back up as my hips will seize'

Mortified doesn't cover it, all the sitters looked suitably smug and I had to spend the journey studying my shoes!

crashdoll · 12/06/2013 11:42

Aren't backpacks much higher than a buggy anyway? So, I'm not sure how it would hit a child in the face.

Arabesque · 12/06/2013 11:42

In that case Antisecco, your views are always welcome Wine

Antisecco · 12/06/2013 11:45

Ace story Kato I wish I had been there!

It reminds me of the time I got on a bus where there were no available seats and the driver yelled 'We are not going anywhere until someone lets that pregnant lady sit down' Swamped with offers. Didn't have the heart to say I wasn't pregnant

BornToFolk · 12/06/2013 11:50

YANBU, it's a pet hate of mine how people get on a bus and then stand in a cluster right at the front of the bus and around/on the stairs. It makes it really hard to get to the free seats upstairs or at the back.

I appreciate that some people may prefer to stand for medical reasons but they could at least shift down the bus a bit.

OTTMummA · 12/06/2013 12:20

I don't stand in the gangway, I stand where the flip up/down seats are, I only take up one space (in-between 2 poles) but people still ask me to move so they can sit,, well no I can't, sorry but I need to hold on so I don't crash into everyone.
I get all sorts of funny looks but I've paid for my space and I need it, I wait for the next one if I can't stand in a safe spot.

TabbyM · 12/06/2013 14:45

No you are not BU! Round here you can always spot the new students who haven't worked out bus rules yet. We have bendy buses and there are usually seats in the back but if one person stands people go all sheeplike and huddle at the front. This not only make it difficult for everyone else to get on and off but the driver can't see how much space there is and sometimes won't stop to pick up folk.

spatchcock · 12/06/2013 14:54

The worst thing about public transport is OTHER PEOPLE and their awful standing/non standing/swaying near babies habits. Why don't they just walk?

So glad I have a chauffeured limousine to take me wherever I want to go now.

Sleep404 · 12/06/2013 15:06

Things are a bit better now, but I used to stand on buses so I didn't have to squeeze my long legs into the minute space available between the seats. It was either stand or sit sideways and have my legs block the aisle anyway.
