I agree a bit of competition is good, if the kids want to do it, fine. I just tthink these parents run the risk of raising psychologically unhealthy adults in the future. Too much pressure can't be a good thing.

I thought the boy whose dad was ex Hongkong police was brilliant - he just had this real sense of humour about what his dad was like, and took it all in good part - amazing really! I especially loved it when his dad had made him do a badminton tournament to experience failure - the boy was just laughing about how badly he'd done. I'd be so proud to have a lovely kid like that.
Agree the editing was awful, and probably made chess mom, for example, seem even worse than she is. Like when Joshua in the car threatened to kick his poor younger brother in the "lunch box", and mom just said "Joshua." indulgently and then it cut away. One hopes that, in reality, she went on to talk to him about respecting his little bro - but we didn't see that, just bro's lip quivering.
I did feel for Hugo's parents, who I think were pretty open about the fact that they were struggling to cope. Thought-provoking programme in some ways, but I agree the children should not be, in some cases, held up to ridicule on national TV in this way.
