To not be able to decide if this is a gas leak?

Okay, so I have a really poor sense of smell.

We have recently moved house and there is a smell a bit like gas in the under the sink cupboard. I'm not 100% sure it is, though. It is noticeable but not super strong.

I have tried taking apart the plumbing under the sink to see if perhaps there was something trapped in the drain pipe from the last owners - but it's clear as far as I can see.

The smell is noticeable when you open the cupboard doors but dissipates after a bit if they're left open. The gas cooker is the other side of the kitchen.

Is there anything it could be besides a leak? Would it be wasting emergency services time to ring the gas emergency line?

I'm really hoping you've rung them by now - you should never, ever mess around if you think you can smell gas. I called them twice in our old house - once it was absolutely the right call as a new gas fire hadn't been properly installed and was leaking gas Shock; the second time it actually wasn't a problem (flames were burning orange on the cooker and I was worried about carbon monoxide - transpired the gas was a bit 'dirty' due to gas works in the main road). Both times the guys were brilliant and very lovely even on the 'false alarm' call out - it's their job to decide if it's a gas leak, not yours and they know that they mustn't put people off calling as the next time someone hesitates it could end in death.

Seriously - gas is not something to fuck around with - if you have a really poor sense of smell and think you can smell gas then surely that should indicate you need to call them?

deffo report it. This happened to my sis when she moved in to her new place. There was a very faint smell of gas when you went in the kitchen. She called someone out and there was a leak. better to be safe than sorry where gas is concerned.

Tanks so much to everyone who posted! Gas man just been and said it's all fine and is probably the previous owners' extremely manky dishwasher.

So I think a hot cycle with the DW might be in order!!

But at least DH and I haven't been exploded...

Well done for doing the right thing! Now you can relax.

Okay, I have just cleaned out the filter on the dishwasher and can I just say - boak !!!

That was officially the most disgusting thing I have found in this house, a close second to the kitchen drawer full of fingernail clippings and the angry fungus living in the shower.
