to be annoyed that World War Z looks to be NOTHING like the book?

Saw a trailer for it last week and it looks like they've just made a Brad Pitt zombie film which is very, VERY loosely based on what I thought was a great and unique book.

I don't generally 'do' zombie stuff, but the book was on offer on Kindle and once I started it I couldn't put it down. Essentially, the book is a series of interviews (one interviewer travelling the world) with different people affected by a worldwide zombie infestation and covers how it began, how it built up, how the world reacted and how things are recovering after.

The film shows Brad Pitt being all action hero and leaving his family to go and aid in the fight against zombies. Then his family are in peril, he's trying to get back to them, etc.

Unless the trailer is woefully mis-selling it the film seems to have very little to do with the source material. Really gets my goat when they do this.

I'm really excited by it, can't wait to watch it. Although I love most zombie films anyway, I'm half way through the book and wanting to get it finished before seeing the film.

ScarletLady02...I saw the original Evil Dead at the cinema, back in the early 80's.Shock I really don't see the need for a re-make. Hmm

(and ...good grief at my earlier post!...just because a film is based on a book, not the other way round ,duh!)

VivaLeBeaver · 12/06/2013 22:59

Are any of you zombie fans on this thread also gamers? I'm quite excited about the new ps3 game The Last Of Us which is released tomorrow. Anyone else think it looks good?

Heartbrokenmum73 · 12/06/2013 23:04

But that's my point!

If they're using the book as their source material (and the bloody title too!) how can they deviate so far from it? It appears to be completely different on every level apart from having zombies in it.

I think Brad Pitt is a fantastic actor who has yet to disappoint me. Not into zombies as whole. If this was yet another zombie film, Brad Pitt or not (I like him, but don't go particularly out of my way to see his films, IYSWIM), I wouldn't be that interested. What I was interested in was the take on the book. And it isn't a take on the book.

So why not, as I said earlier, just make their own sodding zombie film with different title? Because they're trying to sucker in fans of the BOOK by vaguely linking to it.

Think I might make a film of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, but add in a fox (who wasn't in the book), a dramatic scene at a frozen waterfall (that wasn't in the book) and change the White Witches reindeer to polar bears because they look more dramatic. Oh, wait, it's already been done. But I'll add Brad Pitt and fast zombies!

Viva, yes! We've had it preordered for months!

Ludoole · 13/06/2013 00:04

My son loves the book. Im so disappointed the film will be different.

VivaLeBeaver · 13/06/2013 05:33

BeyondTheLimits - let me know if its any good. I've only played Mario type games before and am just a bit worried I'll be no good at a serious game.

I don't think that "fans of the book" are a significant demographic.

It's not exactly Harry Potter.

If all the fans of the book went to see the film, or if all fans of the book boycotted the film, it would make such a tiny marginal difference to their takings.

So they probably don't actually care.

They care about making a film that lots of people will go and see, hence Brat Pitt, speedy zombies, cute child, and snappy title.

Perhaps they've taken nothing from the book except the title. I'd prefer that actually - make a totally different story (one that will make sense with Brad Pitt saving a cute child and then the world) rather than trying to massage the existing story into a shape that doesn't really work.

ScrambledSmegs · 13/06/2013 10:57

No, the fans of the book probably don't number that many in global terms (although it is becoming 'cult' reading by word of mouth). If it's a halfway-decent movie I would probably go and watch it and enjoy it, despite the fact that the book explores the geopolitical and sociological impact of a pandemic/conflict of devastating scale and the film seems to be just Brad Pitt v. Zombies.

However the signs aren't good. The film has been subject to re-writes, re-shoots, and is allegedly massively over-budget. It will probably be this year's Waterworld - not a horrific flop, just won't recoup its budget and will be critically a bit meh. I would love to be wrong and for it to be great though.

But the OP is asking if she is BU to be annoyed that what she thought was going to be a film adaptation of a book she enjoyed is in fact going to be virtually unrecognisable as such. And I don't think she is BU.

Trills · 14/06/2013 08:54

Oh it's certainly not U to be disappointed if you got exited about an actual adaptation and then one isn't there.

I think it may have been overly optimistic to believe that's what anyone was making though.
