to use a hoover when I have no carpet

I hoover the wood floors. And the tiles in the kitchen. I cant be arsed with sweeping and scooping the dust up only to leave loads of it everywhere. I wipe the floors after of course, and use the 'brush' setting on the nossle so no awful scratchy noises.

Friend looked at me like I was a complete nutter when I told her I do this. She's got what looks to me like a giant mop thing to do her floors and it looks back breaking.

AIBU?

I hoover all my floors downstairs as we don't have carpet. Sweeping never picks it all up properly.
And depending how bad they are either a quick wipe with a cloth or mop.

I also hoover the dust on the skirtings and hearth on the fireplace also cobwebs on the ceiling (seem to be finding loads lately)

YABU (all of you) for thinking that TO HOOVER is a verb!

Hoover is a brand name like Dyson or Henry.

As for using your vacuum cleaner to clean your floors YADNBU - and they clean the skirting boards, windo sills, picture and dado rails, etc - cobwebs on the ceiling and round the light all go into the vacuum cleaner in this house :)

CecilyP · 11/06/2013 16:55

YANBU. The only alternative would be to sweep with a broom then take up the sweepings with a dustpan and brush - how tedious! Surely nobody washes their floors as frequently as they hoover them.

mrspaddy · 11/06/2013 16:59

I vacuum my floors too. Then I flat mop the laminate with a natural floor spray and bleach mop toilets and kitchen. I got a mini hoover that is brilliant and nippy. I used to wipe all the floors on my hands and knees but those days are over.. thank god !!

ParadiseChick · 11/06/2013 17:04

Well aware hoover is a brand name

Its one of those quirks where the brand name has become synonymous with the product

WinterWinds · 11/06/2013 17:11

It will always be a hoover in this house. Vacuum cleaner just seems..... well......posh!!! Grin

ParadiseChick · 11/06/2013 17:15

Can you imagine my confusion when we bought a house, complete with a hoover washing machine

katolla · 11/06/2013 17:27

Is it worth getting a steam cleaner? Mopping takes so long to dry. I use wipes on the laminate after hoovering but the tiles in the kitchen are too lumpy for that.

valiumredhead · 11/06/2013 17:35

You shouldn't really use a stream cleaner on wooden floors. A smart mop from lake land is fantastic.

EstelleGetty · 11/06/2013 17:37

I hoover my wooden floors, tiles, the lot. And vertical surfaces such as doors if I can't be arsed to dust them. YANBU!

ParadiseChick · 11/06/2013 17:40

As long as your floor is wooden (ie not laminate or engineered wood) and sealed you'll be fine with a steam mop, they leave very little water on the floor.

SnookyPooky · 11/06/2013 17:48

Hoover! Sweeping just takes to long and I can't get right in the corners.
We have tiled floors throughout and cats. Enough said.

valiumredhead · 12/06/2013 16:16

Hoover is a verb and a noun I googled

jacks365 · 12/06/2013 16:29

Most of the house is varnished floorboards so has gaps, sweeping pushes the dust into the gaps so I vacuum instead. I use a steam cleaner on those and the tiled floors makes it much quicker. Why make things harder ( I hate the state of the steamer cloth when I finish)

Iactuallydothinkso · 12/06/2013 18:03

I most definitely vacuum the wooden floors and the tiled ones and the Lino. We have 3 cats and a broom just moves cat hair around.

LaFataTurchina · 12/06/2013 18:13

I sweep the wooden bits (sitting room, corridor, bedroom) and sweep and mop the tiled bits (kitchen and bathroom).

It is tedius though, I'm divering whether to buy a steam mop or a vacuum cleaner. What do you guys reckon is better?

I'm edging towards steam mop for the hygene aspect plus the advert makes it look fun to use
