To make my DC eat breakfast in silence?

I have 3 DC (2, 5 & 7) and morning are pretty stressful and have to leave the house by 8:15. Breakfast & brushing teeth is the hardest bit, they always end up messing around, squabbling, getting up and wandering off etc at breakfast so I have a new rule they they need to eat in silence. This then calms them down for brushing teeth. AIBU?!

I just know that eating in silence would make mine keep bursting into fits of giggles! Good luck with it x

Polga123 · 11/06/2013 10:07

Well almost silence!

Not if it works.

chocoluvva · 11/06/2013 10:08

Whatever works for you and your family is fine IMO!

EagleRiderDirk · 11/06/2013 10:08

Yabu but only because I can only dream of that myself!

Polga123 · 11/06/2013 10:09

It feels a bit Victorian, but it works.

If they wander off during breakfast, then it's reasonable to clear their dishes away, on the basis that you don't leave the table until you've finished eating

Maybe allow 5 mins TV if they're ready on time - that's a small reward which might be a good incentive, but you have to be strict / consistent - absolutely no TV for anyone who's not ready yet

Silence wouldn't work in this house.

What time do you have to get up in the morning?

Birdsgottafly · 11/06/2013 10:31

Keeping things as calm as possible, including noise, makes sense, when you are constricted by time.

It depends how it is enforced, the 2 year old is to young to ignore, or punish, encouragement to concentrate on any task, including getting ready to leave the house, is fine, though.

I would love to do this but can't imagine my DC's complying. How do you make it work?

RoooneyMara · 11/06/2013 12:06

We just have the telly on...it works extremely well! They just stare into space, while getting dressed/eating.

RoooneyMara · 11/06/2013 12:08

Oh and no table either. Well we do but my computer is on it. They have cereal on their little table in the living room, or their laps if they want, or toast just in their hands...sometimes with a plate...

TheCutOfYourJib · 11/06/2013 12:10

roooney mine stare at the TV and stop eating so no tv till they're ready in this house. I brush my ds's teeth for him so it gets done properly.

mrsjay · 11/06/2013 12:21

if it works it works I had to do something the same when dds were younger espcially dd2 who is a witterer and would take ages it be eat talk fidget eat talk fidget, and there was no telly either, (was all fun in my house)

Sellotape Ghoul?

Whatever works for you in your house Op.

Polga123 · 11/06/2013 13:13

My 2 year old just babbles away anyway but the other two quieten down, if I don't do this and leave them to it it is chaos
