I know, I know. But we already had a small bowl set up ready to change the water in our big tank and now one of the poor souls who was being boiled alive in a plastic bag is now residing in said bowl.

I say that but it's more sitting at the bottom of the bowl, don't think it's going to last tbh but can anything be done ?? Think it has gill rot ??

I'm not sure how serious a pp was about bopping the fish on the head to end its misery but the kindest way to euthanise a fish it to apparently put it in a sealable plastic bag with some water leaving some air in in and then put it in the freezer, apparently the fish just falls asleep and is none the wiser. :)

interesting mummtotwins - i know that is an accepted thing to do with snakes, im not sure about fish - maybe you're right.

Nooo, never freeze a fish. It's not humane at all, they get ice crystals forming in their blood and it's not painless. Hitting them over the head or decapitation is much quicker, although not very pleasant.

There is one way that it easier for fish and fish owner- knock them out with a few drops of clove oil. It's a natural anaesthetic and gently puts them to sleep. Then you can either OD them on clove oil or add vodka. It's still not nice but it's peaceful and non-violent.

Aww OP, your DP was so nice to rescue the fishy. Am so Angry they still do this, it's so cruel to have them there in the little bags ...

To the poster above who asked, never ever keep a goldfish in one of your stereotypical round bowls. We, in pure ignorance, did exactly that, and woke up one morning to find that Fishy had jumped out of his bowl in the night and died Sad
You need a proper big tank with a filter and a lid in order to properly keep any fish, apparently, even supposedly-easy goldfish.

We have various fish stuff in the house, bowls tanks and so on DSC keep wanting to get some fish to live in them but I keep quoting a famous line of my DM "nothing else living coming in this house that doesn't earn a wage" fish are more work than they seem and we already have a mad terrier and DSC only spending 40% of time here and DP travelling lots. Hope lucky perks up Smile
