To think the middle of a recession is not the ideal time for a school uniform re-vamp

I've always bought plenty of decent quality school uniform for DD1 and happily assumed I wouldn't need to buy anything now for DD2 (going into year10 in September) as everything is in fine condition.
DD2 has just come home with a letter saying that they are changing the colour of the school shirts from this september and then having wholesale uniform changes from 2014 (when she is going into year11). What a bloody annoying waste of money.
Oh yeah, and they are tightening up on shoes as well. Finding little girly school shoes in size8 is going to be fun isn't it? I was hoping her black leather Keds would last another year.

Has it changed head, or become an academy or something?

I'd be Angry too. Was there any consultation?

SodaStreamy · 07/06/2013 19:26

Our school did this too, changed from blue and grey to black only. Very annoying. We just accepted it but I do now wish some of the parents had got together and questioned it with the school

Earnshaw · 07/06/2013 19:27

Will year 11s be exempted from buying the new kit? They were at my DD's school. And year 8s were initially, so they could get 2 years' wear out of the old uniform before replacing it. It's worth pushing for that, there's plenty of time to put your case. I wouldn't be at all happy about buying new uniform in year 11.

thebody · 07/06/2013 19:29

School uniform is a stupid waste of money anyway and I absolutely hate it.

But donning hard hat and expect to be flamed .dont care mind.

You are not being unreasonable op. fuckin ridiculous.

Turniptwirl · 07/06/2013 19:29

My school changed uniforms, well white shirts and black trousers/skirts stayed the same but blazer, jumper? Tie and pe kit changed the year I started so fortunately I just had the new stuff. But they let kids carry on wearing the old stuff tip they outgrew it

Flobbadobs · 07/06/2013 19:29

Sounds annoying, High school uniform can be expensive and you'll have to change the whole lot for one year only I think? YANBU.
could I ask a question related to this please? Does this generally happen when a school becomes an academy?

Remotecontrolduck · 07/06/2013 19:31

YY to what Earnshaw said, local school did that here but year 11 (and 10, I think?) were exempt, for the obvious reason being you just don't buy a whole new uniform for students leaving in May/June!

If they're making you buy a whole new uniform that's just stupid and pointless. It should be phased in.

Earnshaw · 07/06/2013 19:34

Flobbadobs Yes, in our case.

Flobbadobs · 07/06/2013 19:35

Oh joy.... Roll on September..
Thanks Earnshaw, sorry for the hijack OP x

OHforDUCKScake · 07/06/2013 19:36

Are you sure it counts for year 11?

The same thing happened in my school. Except it applied to everyone but those who were entering year 11 the following year. So for a year we were in the old uniform the same time the rest of school were in hideous blazers.

Earnshaw · 07/06/2013 19:36

And yes, it may have been just years 7 & 9 who wore it the first year, now I think of it (DD was starting in year 7 when it was introduced).

MoominMammasHandbag · 07/06/2013 19:41

Yes there is a new Head, and the first we have heard about it (apart from rumours) is this letter home. They are going to consult about the 2014 changes but no consultation over the change of shirt colour in September, and no mention of phasing in periods in the letter.
So the first thing the new Head does is put everyone's backs up....not the best strategy.

YANBU. My school did this, parents complained so they made it that new students would have the new uniforms so it started with the year group. It's a bunch of shit tbh and I think you should definitely get a group together to complain about it.

Earnshaw · 07/06/2013 19:49

Encourage everyone you know to mention phasing in when you are 'consulted'.

At DD's school, the students had a lot of input into the design of the uniform, resulting in a smart but pricey blazer, with piping on the lapels Hmm
