To think that these workmen in my neighbours property shouldn't be blowing smoke into my garden?

My neighbours a few doors down seem to be having a new patio or something laid. The workmen are cutting up stones with a grinder and the smoke and dust from it is blowing everywhere. It's a lovely sunny day and I've had to bring my washing in because it'll be filthy again if I don't. I've had to close all the windows and the smell of petrol from the saw they are using is really strong. That and the dust together are really getting on my chest and in the back of my throat.

Looking around most of my neighbours have washing out as well but are still in work. It'll be probably be filthy when they get back. Am I right in thinking that these workmen should have informed us all that they would be doing this so we'd know not to leave windows open Eric? I know I can't really stop them doing it, but it's surely common courtesy isn't it?

They're a few doors down, they probably didn't realise it'd be so dusty.

TheBirdsFellDownToDingADong · 06/06/2013 17:02

In all fairness, what would you suggest they do?

redlac · 06/06/2013 17:02

The neighbours should have told you not the workmen. I feel you pain though - I came home from work to find next door had had their roof powerwashed and all the moss and dirt went all over my washing, patio, plants, trampoline etc ggrrrr

Thurlow · 06/06/2013 17:03

Sorry, I think YABU. It's annoying, but they had no idea how windy it might be today or what direction the dust will blow in. It's like noise from the builders - irritating, but not something you can remotely complain about.

Tee2072 · 06/06/2013 17:03

YABU

Life doesn't stop because you've hung your washing out. Maybe they could have told you but they certainly aren't required to.

Charlesroi · 06/06/2013 17:05

I think you are a bit unreasonable. They are doing the work on a weekday when most people will be out at work. Try living next door to somebody having a loft conversion Grin

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 06/06/2013 17:06

Yanbu. They should be using water to keep the dust down.

CelticPixie · 06/06/2013 17:06

I wouldn't actually complain about it. I know things like that have to be done. I'm just a bit pissed off that my washing has been ruined lol. I dare say they will be finished for the day soon anyway.

Im just looking at their neighbours right next door and every bloody window is open! Their house is going to be dusty as hell!

They are not blowing smoke into your garden.

They are doing work that generates dust. It is blowing into your garden of its own accord.

Binkyridesagain · 06/06/2013 17:10

I'm having building work done, bigger than a patio, I know the builders will be on site every day during the week. How ever I couldn't tell you on which day dust will be created.

YABU builders mean dust.

CelticPixie · 06/06/2013 17:10

Beer. The neighbours are rarely there, so I don't really know them. I think they work long hours or something.

I thought you meant they climb on the fence, smoke fags and blow the smoke towards your garden and i was thinkng wtf!

SodaStreamy · 06/06/2013 19:12

not to leave windows open Eric?

who's Eric Grin

Cosmosim · 06/06/2013 19:31

Most people don't leave their houses unsecured and close their windows before they go to work. If you're home, you close them.

But yes, their timing sucks. Hmm

McNewPants2013 · 06/06/2013 19:34

This is one of the reason I don't peg out washing.

I can't stand looking at it, I want to enjoy my garden without clothes flapping about.

xylem8 · 06/06/2013 19:41

YABU .It is a dusty job and they can't really do anything about that.

MalcolmTuckersMum · 06/06/2013 19:44

What would you like to happen OP? I mean - with regard to your washing and airborne particulates of a worrisome nature. What would ease your mind? How should people go about this stuff so as not to upset you?

pictish · 06/06/2013 19:47

Seriously - what would you have them do about it?

PseudoBadger · 06/06/2013 19:52

Well dust can be a Statutory Nuisance. I would expect builders if necessary to provide adequate screening and damping down during work that may cause a dust problem to neighbours.

Tough one - it would have been neighbourly to warn you all but it is building work.

What I would say though is that YA-slightly-NU as if the builders had even thought about it, they could have done it without the dust etc as we did work where we cut up stones with a grinder. Funnily enough, if you have a water jet grinder or a hosepipe handy, the dust tends to stay put. All they really needed was a bucket of water or a hose.

Dogsmom · 06/06/2013 20:26

YABU
It's dust, they can't control where it goes.
