To think that if a house is advertised as a family home

gallifrey · 06/06/2013 13:04

then you would be allowed to live in it with a family!

Wrom we are in the process of moving about 100 miles away from where we live now. We have been looking on rightmove and thought we had found the perfect house for us. 3 bedroom, lovely garden and opposite a play area and in the catchment area for the best school in the area.

DH phoned the agent yesterday and was told that because he works and I am a SAHM we wouldn't even be allowed to view the house at all because the landlady was looking for a professional couple with no children.

We are beyond pissed off and really want to complain to someone about this discrimination

Sue them

Bastards

noisytoys · 06/06/2013 13:07

That's ridiculous I wasn't aware they could dictate what the tenants did in the house Hmm

CreatureRetorts · 06/06/2013 13:09

Hmm just the sort of place a young professional would want.... When I was a young professional we all rented flats.

gallifrey · 06/06/2013 13:10

Also she wanted to inspect the property that we live in now....

Montybojangles · 06/06/2013 13:10

It's their house, they can surely rent to who they want to? Some landlords say no pets, this one is saying no kids.

Montybojangles · 06/06/2013 13:11

That's a bit weird

Labootin · 06/06/2013 13:11

Bollocks that the ll wanted to inspect your current house.

Trills · 06/06/2013 13:12

So you were told that you can't have it AND also told that they want to see your current house? Are you sure this is a real agency and not some burglary scam?

topbannana · 06/06/2013 13:12

The LL has the right to rent to whoever they choose so in that sense YABU to be pissed off about it. It does sound like the property is poorly marketed if it is listed as a family home and I can see why you are put out about not even being allowed to view it.
OTOH there is a 5 bedroom house round here for rent that quite clearly stipulates "no children" Apart from swingers, how many childless people need 5 bedrooms?!

Wylye · 06/06/2013 13:13

You what? She wanted to come check out your current house??? Shock

Seriously, walk away happy you've not got stuck with her - landlords like that make your lives hellish.

EuroShaggleton · 06/06/2013 13:14

Congratulate yourself on your lucky escape...

gallifrey · 06/06/2013 13:16

The agent said about her wanting to look at our current house before asking how old our children were and then he contacted the ll and she said she didn't want children in the house and that also she wanted both parents to be working!

OP posts:
HormonalHousewife · 06/06/2013 13:17

Good grief... there is no way you would want a landlord like that.

Good job you found out now and not later.

gallifrey · 06/06/2013 13:17

I think we have had a lucky escape, but still pissed off as the house was perfect for us :(

OP posts:
Gigondas · 06/06/2013 13:19

There have been threads like this before- sadly I think landlords can rent to who they want. Silly to say its a family home if wont rent to families unless they are worried about wear and tear of very young kids at home rather than people without kids or older kids.

quickquestionaboutme · 06/06/2013 13:19

we have been turned down from one 6 bedroom and one 7 bedroom house for having 5 children. Both said they wanted no more than 2 children. I just dont see how many people with two children would want a 6/7 bedroom house (and to pay the extra for the bedrooms). It does make me feel slightly better that they are both still sitting there empty so they are not getting rent for them Grin.

Heartbrokenmum73 · 06/06/2013 13:20

I'm also looking to (possibly) move with my three kids and one house that I looked at (RightMove again) said it was a family home, three bedrooms, but then stipulates that they will only take children that are 'two teenagers between the ages of 16-18'. Wtf is wrong with people?

Gigondas · 06/06/2013 13:21

There are some loony ll about. Was turned down as a young professional for a flat by ll who was worried that we would shove toilet rolls Dow. The toilet and block it... ConfusedConfusedHmm.

Gigondas · 06/06/2013 13:22

Heartbroken that ll had clearly never seen what teens can do to bedroom or even worse if have a party.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 06/06/2013 13:26

The LL sounds neurotic, you certainly don't want to be renting from someone like her anyway. However, she may have had her fingers burnt anyway, maybe she has had tenants with kids who trashed the place.

I am a LL and yes, of course it is down to me who lives in my house......it is the tenants home but always my house.

I have no problem with tenants with children, in fact, most of the time I would say I have had better experience with those with kids.

Quickquestion - who the hell would rent a house that big with only 2 children....I reckon that house will be on the market for a while!!

K8Middleton · 06/06/2013 13:32

Well demanding both parents be working could be indirect sex discrimination but really that is irrelevant.

The LL is clearly bonkers and would be an utter nightmare. Count this one as a lucky escape!

HoHoHoNoYouDont · 06/06/2013 13:41

Also she wanted to inspect the property that we live in now....

Bloody hell, I've heard it all now!

That's what references are for.

She is clearly trying to be cautious to protect her investment. She would be better getting a good landlord insurance policy imo. You can't go round checking on people's previous accommodation Grin

I'm a landlord by the way.

jollygoose · 06/06/2013 13:46

ll is totally unreasonable. KI am about to let my house 3 bed with garden I would expect it to be to a family

mrscumberbatch · 06/06/2013 13:48

We once looked at a house that was for sale but the previous owner had stipulated in a contract of sale that the house was not to be sold to a young family with children and that the garden was to be maintained (very floral and OTT) (there was also things like 'Children are allowed in the house but may not stay overnight.)

It's still on the market 2 years later as it's a perfect family house but the stupid contract stops anyone from moving ahead.

I have no idea how you can be allowed to put these things in a sale contract.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 06/06/2013 13:52

That is crap. Fine for her to rent to whoever she likes, but why call it a family home if it isn't?!

We looked at somewhere where the LL told us she would drop the rent for us as we are childless, and therefore would be out all day and wouldn't damage the place. Because I am tedious honest I pointed out I work at home, and she wanted me to work out how many hours I spent in the house. Hmm

Needless to say, we ran like the wind! Grin Can you imagine how uptight she would be at inspections, this woman? You've had a lucky escape.
