To fight with DH over a Wifi Baby Monitor

I feel like DH lives in fantasy land & needs to grow up.

He's permanently running up debt because even when our money's run out he's buying rubbish for his bike, iPad or latest fad off EBay without me knowing.

And now - with a baby on the way, a ton of stuff we actually need - boring unglamorous stuff like a breast pump, bottles, steriliser etc - he's completely fixated on just one thing: a Wifi Baby monitor.

He wants Ons of those gadgets that let you see baby in its cot via an app on your phone...he reckons he'll be able to watch it from work through the day. These things are EXPENSIVE, many don't have great reviews or have the same integral features of a standard baby monitor like temperature and breathing alerts...that's just not the point of them. I've also pointed out to him that baby won't even be in its cot most of the day...he seems to think I can cart it around with us so he can watch us.

I'm getting v fed up of this and think its just an example of DH being naive, immature and unrealistic. AIBU???

And does anyone have any experience of these blasted wifi things? Thanks....

Oh and also if he is clever enough he could actually set one up if you had your own network at home with a cheapie webcam and he could log into from his phone. Suggest he sets that up (as I say my husband could do this but he is a chief nerd) and see what he says? An app for that is a complete waste of time, any true techno freak knows that! Just bring him down a peg or two.

Even if you had some way of setting something up that doesn't involve the wifi gadget, I'd still not bother having it set so he can be watching when you're going out and about. I'd hate to feel I was being watched all the time.

You don't need a baby monitor for a baby that will be sleeping with you for the first 6 months. My 4 month old is currently asleep in the Moses basket next to the sofa, or would sleep in the pram or carseat and at night sleeps in our room.

Also, shouldn't he be working, not looking at babies?

From what I know of video monitors, they are distracting and you spend your evenings watching baby on screen instead of getting on with other stuff.

That made me laugh!

We've had to move the cot away from the wall so our 16 month DS can't drag the wire from the monitor into his cot.

His poor toy rabbits get chewed and I often go in there to find all his toys thrown out onto the floor whilst he's busy wrestling slumber bear. Those toys suffer.
