I agree with feminism, and I thank all those women who have fought for the same rights as a male.

But does feminism play a part in everything in life.

It does for me, yes

i see sexism/misogyny on every corner

marjproops · 05/06/2013 22:28

okay without starting a bun fight can someone give a view on the female tennis player equal pay thing? and the justice in that?

LRDtheFeministDragon · 05/06/2013 22:30

I don't follow why, if you think it's unfair (which I think I do too, though I don't know much about tennis), and unfair in a gendered way, you think it's not about feminism? Confused

LRDtheFeministDragon · 05/06/2013 22:30

I mean, I get that there are other perfectly valid ways to look at it than feminism, but I don't get why feminism would be invalid.

WilsonFrickett · 05/06/2013 22:33

Well the tennis thing sounds unfair to me, although I'm another one who doesn't know much about tennis. But I'm generally not in favour of any gender bring paid more for doing less work.

Cloverer · 05/06/2013 22:37

Feminism doesn't mean - "being the same as men"

It means eliminating the structural bias against women in society.

Maternity for example - the issue isn't "men only get two weeks leave, so women should only get two weeks leave" it means why is maternity care so poor? Why are pregnant women treated like idiots and public property? Why does having children disproportionately disadvantage mothers?

ApocalypseThen · 05/06/2013 22:38

okay without starting a bun fight can someone give a view on the female tennis player equal pay thing? and the justice in that?

Could this, in any sense be the greatest challenge facing feminists today? The struggle to have women tennis players (tennisettas, as feminists prefer) has barely been won - while women are getting the same for doing less (THE feminist aim), the gains are still under threat.

Or, you know, not. This is a pretty typical whine of the anti feminist brigade who can't find any real and substantial advantages women have and are forced to argue this nonsense.

I think feminism - the right of women to live as people - touches every aspect of life. It's not about splitting things down the middle as straightforward equality, it's ensuring that your life isn't arbitrarily curtailed because you have a vagina.

McNewPants2013 · 05/06/2013 23:13

It such a confusing subject but one I am very interested in, no so much for myself but most important for my 4 year old daughter.

'Breastfeeding: boy babies are breastfeed significantly less than girl babies. This is thought to be down to the sexualisation of breasts.'

I didn't know that Smudging. Do you have links? I'd be interested to read that.

bigkidsdidit · 05/06/2013 23:17

I don't understand, Marj. Are you saying that because four (if all the grand slams are won by different women) women might do a but better than men, we should focus on that, and not on the fact that the majority of women in the entire rest of the world are poorer than men? That four women getting something they might not deserve means we don't need feminism?

FunLovinBunster · 05/06/2013 23:19

I don't understand the Gold Standard, but aren't kittens lovely and fluffy??

Of course feminism plays a part in everything.

I think the tennis thing is sidetracking people slightly...

StuntGirl · 06/06/2013 00:01

Feminism is about equality, so yeah, I think it's important enough to play a part in everything.

FreudiansSlipper · 06/06/2013 00:14

Yes it does

what about all other sports men earn far more from sponsorship but to be a top athlete you need to dedicate yourself totally so why do men earn so much more

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 06/06/2013 02:08

Someone reminded me today that - in the whole history of the UK - there have only been 300 and something female MPs, whereas RIGHT NOW, just the guys currently in the job, there are 500 and something male MPs. No-one told me to think of feminism in every part of life, but it started popping out at me everywhere. One of the things that always reminds me of how fragile things are in terms of equality is the way we can meet women who are "the first female " all the time, many of them aren't even old. It's only six years ago for example that the first female beefeater was appointed at the Tower of London, she's not even fifty yet. Within two years she'd been bullied so badly at work for her gender that 2 of her colleagues were sacked.

garlicgrump · 06/06/2013 04:07

Feminism doesn't play a part in everything, no. This is bad news for women. It should.

Tallulahmae · 06/06/2013 16:37

For me it plays a role in every aspect of life - including with issues regarding maternity, Norway are doing the parental leave much better than we do here

Pressthatin · 06/06/2013 16:48

For me, I analyse a lot of things with my 'feminist' hat on but I analyse much more with my 'class' hat on.

So, I will analyse certain things in life (say maternity for example) firstly with my 'class' hat on and secondly with my 'feminist' hat on. So I will always firstly think about how these things affect working class people and secondly how they affect women.

I see working class people as 'my people' much more than women. I see there being a much bigger difference between me and posh, rich woman than me and a working class man.

I think class and gender permeate everything in life but I care much much more about class injustice than gender injustice.

I have no idea if that post makes any sense!

FobblyWoof · 06/06/2013 16:52

Yes, I think feminism penetrates everything in society, as it should.

There is still a long way to go in the struggle for true equality and to get there we need to be questioning things.
