AIBU in thinking superscrimpers aren't really that scrimpy?

Now, I'm on a very tight budget so welcome any tips on how to save pennies with household expenses. It is not my normal t.v viewing (am more of a Dexter/Breaking Bad kind of person) but thought I'd have a nosy at their scrimping suggestions.

Having watched a couple of episodes I've come to the conclusion that:
a) I live near a lot of VERY cheap shops
b) They don't really understand what items people have lying around their homes
c) I must be completely missing the point

I don't have spare Cath kidston material in my linen cupboard, or essential oils, wax, geletin, random bags of sunflower seeds, spare glass vases or whatever else they think you can 'scrimp' candles/bird feeders/laptop covers out of.

A lot of the stuff is in my local pound shop for MUCH cheaper. I understand the recycle/upcycle/ethical aspect of it but its about saving money isn't it?

The food budget part of it was quite good, although my local butchers don't serve 'cheap' cuts of meat any more once it becomes popular (oxtail/pig cheeks? Angry)

So am I missing the point, or they aren't that scrimpy or am I just used to being REALLY scrimpy :) (meant to be a bit light-hearted)

Nope. They're not that scrimpy. Everything they make seems to have involved a massive spend somewhere earlier along the line. Either that, or they're making completely useless things.

(Also, Dexter and Breaking Bad are freakin' awesome.)

HeffalumpTheFlump · 05/06/2013 21:23

I agree! I haven't got half the things needed to make the things they show! I would end up spending just as much buying it all!

Throughgrittedteeth · 05/06/2013 21:28

The only parts I find useful are the shopping and cleaning tips. Ms Moneythingy's bit about how to get a better deal etc on things just depresses me.

heronsfly · 05/06/2013 21:31

I agree, one of them made washing powder a little while ago,I have never even heard of some of the ingredients Grin

Heartbrokenmum73 · 05/06/2013 23:00

There's a book too (hardback, naturally, because what's cheaper than a hardback book when you're trying to save money?). I picked it up in Waterstones today and had a quick flick through - 'how to make your own butter' ffs. Really?

It's all very middle-class and I can't get on with it AT ALL!

Sparklypinknails · 05/06/2013 23:06

YANBU.

"Save money by making your own lip gloss! You'll need to buy massive list of ingredients first though!"

ScarletLady02 · 05/06/2013 23:06

The only bit I find good is the food bit...

But yes, Dexter and Breaking Bad are freaking awesome!

The cleaning tips make me titter - there was an episode in a student shared house where they claimed to be spending 'a fortune' on cleaning products so were instructed to use bi-carb and lemons instead. So 4 lemons on a market stall near me are one pound - zny

purrpurr · 05/06/2013 23:11

YANBU, they're a bunch of nobbers in my view, but then I am horrendously sleep deprived and don't want to watch idiots make necklaces out of pasta and string and then gibber hysterically about how amazingly on trend such accessories are.

Another Dexter & Breaking Bad fan here. Maybe that just means I'm grumpy by nature. Death and meth - consider me entertained. Cheap naff crap - not so much.

lozster · 05/06/2013 23:14

Aah - flippin phone and fat finger fail! 4 lemons = one pound and will go off quickly compared to a trigger spray that doesn't go off, can be bought in quality save or on supermarket offer, actually works and lasts me months!

Patchouli · 05/06/2013 23:15

It's a shame, I thought it could have been a good idea for a program.
I only saw a little bit of one and knew not to bother.
It was how to make exfoliator with honey and sugar? - What's cheap about that?

thetrackisback · 05/06/2013 23:20

There was a programme on about two years ago called economy gastronomy. I thought I'd watch to get some tips! Biggest load of crap going. They managed to get a family if two to stop spending 250 pounds a week to 150 pounds ! Really started screaming at the bloody telly!

lozster · 05/06/2013 23:22

Also, I think you have to be fairly profligate/stupid to begin with to make big savings!

On the other hand, with food, every episode I've seen quotes the weekly food spend of a family of four as being £54. When I worked the till in sainsburys in the early 90s the average spend seemed to be £70 so how 4 people could have 3 meals a day on this is beyond me. In fact in an episode looking at reducing food spend, one couple cooked one main meal a day and spent this with little to no vegetables and no pudding included in this price!

lozster · 05/06/2013 23:24

I also don't think that food of a grade fit for human consumption should be slapped on hair/skin/hard surfaces...

Pumpkinette · 05/06/2013 23:25

YANBU - It's a stupid show and the Mes Moneypenny woman is annoying.

The friendship bracelet made from the ribbon loops inside jumpers and dresses made me laugh. I can see that working as a gift to your friend if you are 7 years old but not for adults.

Oh and the episode that advised you to put tinfoil in paint trays so you can reuse the paint tray. Erm surely just washing the paint tray when your done is cheaper than wasting tinfoil.

Sunshinewithshowers · 05/06/2013 23:26

YANBU
They are twats, the lot of them.

Pumpkinette · 05/06/2013 23:27

Mrs not mes. Sorry I'm posting from my phone.

Repeatedlydoingthetwist · 05/06/2013 23:30

I find Mrs Moneypenny's voice MASSIVELY irritating. A bit too twee and cartoony IYKWIM.

There was a funny thread about this a couple of months ago.

YANBU it's shit. Most of them cost more than they would going to a cheap shop or bulk buying.

Like the fortune they spent on materials making a frigging squirrel for a birthday present, they could have just bought a teddy for a fiver.

Dexter season 8 starts to air in America on 30th June, you could save money by downloading it from piratebay (allegedly).

Elquota · 05/06/2013 23:51

Totally agree! I watched one episode and couldn't relate to it at all.
