to hate the whole concept of party bags

..and yet find myself producing them for fear of disappointing DC.

Going to fill them with a bun, glowstick, bubbles, sweets and chocolate only. But wish I had the courage to just not do them at all. (DC is 4)

I used to love making them up when ds was little, I used to get lot's of sweeties and tat from Woolies.

HappyAsEyeAm · 04/06/2013 21:49

Ds went to a party this year, and the party bag was a brilliant one. Ikea tumbler, filled with sweets, a balloon and a pencil poking out of the top, all wrapped in cellophane and ribbons. Not hugely expensive, but the kids thought they were amazing, and very grown up. They were all five or so Smile

I hate them. Hate them hate them hate them. Endless plastic tat.

I did helium balloons for party guests, and wrapped up a small parcel of sweets as the weight.

I have 3 DC - DD age 9, DS1 age 7 and DS2 age 3. I have never done a party bag. I decide how much to spend (around £1 usually) and buy something for that amount.

Found footballs reduced to £1 - gave them out on Sunday to DS1's friends, they were delighted (that was lucky - bought them months ago, reduced £10 to £1!!!! Have done book people books several times, Plasticine, socks, stickers, match attax cards, plates / mugs. Will buy several months in advance if see good offer!

Actually other people now do same, and so older DC rarely now receive party bags.

just wondering if the party bag lovers also did favours at their wedding and loved these too...

Yes and yes! Spent almost as much time looking at favours as I did wedding dresses.

Punkatheart · 04/06/2013 21:53

I just did some for an adult event - for a bit of fun. Bought those candy stripe sweet bags and put a small book in each one. Candy sticks and a funny note. Given with love. Love party bags - watching adult's eyes light up as if remembering something good, was worth it all...

DewDr0p · 04/06/2013 21:55

Sometimes I do them and sometimes I don't.

I go to town on the actual party itself (all homemade stuff so it's very cheap if time consuming and nervous breakdown inducing ) so I refuse to feel guilty.

Always hand out cake. Sometimes I do a lucky dip (big box full of shredded paper, one small gift per child). Last year we had an Olympics party and they had each decorated a team tshirt and been presented with a cheap plastic medal.

I've only ever once been asked if there were party bags by a child. Maybe I am known as the one who doesn't do party bags?! Shock

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 04/06/2013 21:55

Forever - that's exactly the sort of stuff we put in the party bags. Except the books. Plus a balloon, couple of sweets and cake.

DeskPlanner · 04/06/2013 22:01

Bloody hell, I want to go to a party with Chanel make up and ipods. Sounds great.

takeaway2 · 04/06/2013 22:01

I do useful party bags. My excuse is I'm not from here so I don't really get party bags. This year DS who's 5 gave out party bags with pencils, erasers, rulers, a lolly and a notepad. Useful stuff. I hate the plastic tat. I have a friend who recycles all the tat she gets from her children's parties and stuffs them in a piñata. Grin

AdmiralData · 04/06/2013 22:03

YABU - I've just bought the party bags, napkins and plates for my ds's (12 weeks ... WEEKS) 1st birthday :( But in all fairness I have massive anxiety issues and my upstairs (pointless) bathroom is full of Christmas presents and birthday presents for the next three years hahahahahahaha (Im not mental).

DeskPlanner · 04/06/2013 22:13

Lol Admiral, I've got bought things for gifts and I don't even know who there for. Can't resist a bargain.

I never getv he hatred on MN of suggared almonds. I love them.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 04/06/2013 22:24

I feel the rage at certain things birthday related too. For DD2's recent birthday the girls got a book (Costco special, £10 for a pack of 12) and 2 flakes (mega sized Costco special box of 60). I didn't do a birthday tea though, we just had cake and ice cream. No one ever eats properly at an afternoon party anyways and we were spending far too much more than enough on the activity anyways.

Competitive party bagging exists in spades around here. Haven't seen any iPods, but DD1 got a Monsoon sundress and matching flower clip for her hair once. Unbelievable.

Our wedding favours were fridge magnets that I made with our names & wedding date & a picture of a very famous painting, the original of which hangs in the art gallery where we had our reception. Those were actually fun to do.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 04/06/2013 22:25

Too many anyways in there...

fuzzpig · 04/06/2013 22:41

Best friend's wedding recently, as favours she did lego minifigures :o

fuzzpig · 04/06/2013 22:42

Blimey Admiral I thought I was organised Shock

AdmiralData · 05/06/2013 06:50

That's the problem, whenever I go shopping there is something awesome that someone in my family would love and it is always a bargain and guarantee it wont be that cheap again come Christmas/birthday time. To be fair I make my MIL queasy with my unrelenting organisedness :D
