to be a bit shocked that a customer gets called irresponsible?

I bought something - I live aboard - when it arrived (via airplane) put it all together - a computer printer of sorts - I did not have time until recently to read manual, down load software and test!

When I did it didn't work (did you see that coming! )

Well I got rid of the box (stupid)!

Anyway - customer service good - offered to replace but as no box I have to drive (in another country with no car and young children a 6 hour round trip).

ok fine - but within email comment made was - "it was irresponsible to throw away the box!"

I know it was silly but to be told this? Shock? AIBU to be a bit Shock Hmm we are not talking a small item - aound £300 to ship. £900 to buy!

Why can't you pack it in another box?

RhondaJean · 04/06/2013 06:54

Bit strongly worded perhaps but I wouldn't have got rid if the box without checking it worked first tbh, not sure who is bu here! I suspect both and neither of you at the same time.

Bluebell99 · 04/06/2013 06:55

Why don't you just buy another box and packaging to ship it in? And £300 pounds to ship?! Wow.

NoobyNoob · 04/06/2013 07:14

YABU - just because you're a customer you can still do wrong! Customers not always right y'know.

MrsBeep · 04/06/2013 07:18

Some websites that sell computer goods have in their buyer terms that should retain the box/original packaging in case there is a fault and you have to return it.

Thepursuitofhappiness · 04/06/2013 07:31

Hm could you buy another, return the faulty one in the new box and afk for a refund not replacement?

livinginwonderland · 04/06/2013 07:34

Get another box?

CandidaDoyle · 04/06/2013 07:38

If the email's come from another country, is it possible that English isn't the first language of the person who's written the email? Hence a slight translation problem and coming across more harsh than intended?

Cosmostocupcakes · 04/06/2013 08:27

The person is in England, I am abroad - its not the box more so the packaging - has to be same box with same inserts - totally admit my fault re getting rid of box - not issue - issue is use of statement - "irresponsible" I think this is just quite rude!

Don't have £800 to buy a new one - it was a gift - I am a SAHM.

I agree its not irresponsible to throw a box away if its easy to repack the item, but if it is a special packing system then you proably were a bit silly. But what costs £300 to ship?

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 04/06/2013 08:39

Is it a Thingomatic?

Lazyjaney · 04/06/2013 08:45

Also, is this an eBay buy (your use of "the person" implies it) rather than a proper retailer?

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 04/06/2013 08:48

OP is it a Thingomatic? I want one of those SO badly.

xylem8 · 04/06/2013 08:48

If you were in the UK the seller would be responsible for the return carriage

scarletforya · 04/06/2013 08:51

YANBU

You can't keep the boxes from everything you buy or there would be no room for actual stuff.

'irresponsible' what a load of cr@p!

PostmanPatAlwaysRingsTwice · 04/06/2013 09:00

I always keep packaging for things like that in case they don't work.
However, the item is faulty so you have a claim under the Sale of Goods Act for a refund, repair or replacement.

Their t&c regarding returning items in original packaging doesn't trump this as they are in breach of the Act.

There's a sample letter here which makes reference to being reimbursed for return P&P but I would think in this case as the cost is so high it would be reasonable to insist on a prepaid label.

The fault could have developed after the first few uses in which case you would have had a similar claim but would probably have thrown away the box like most people.

Cosmostocupcakes · 04/06/2013 09:04

not thinkomatic - what is that?

And not ebay!

I waited 2 months to get it bought out due to price of shipping - it is crazy expensive! the box was about 2ftx1ftx1ft - its for crafting planning on setting up my own business!

NEVER worked! as I said the customer service was good - very help - just shocked at follow up email calling me irresponsible!

NeoMaxiZoomDweebie · 04/06/2013 09:07

Thingomatic is a 3d printer...you put sheets of plastic in and make 3d things. AMAZING.

Balaboosta · 04/06/2013 09:09

Ask them to send you an empty box with correct inserts and pay for it if necessary

Cosmostocupcakes · 04/06/2013 09:15

due to size - I would still have to pay £30 for new box then £300 for shipping!

Cosmostocupcakes · 04/06/2013 09:54

PostmanPat - thanks for that!

Cosmostocupcakes · 04/06/2013 09:55
