to think LIFE'S TOO SHORT for sewing on Brownie badges

I would probably not do it at all but found a note-to-self written by DD2 saying...

'I am sad becose mummy did not come to my promise party and [DD2] won't let me sleep in her bed and my tadploes have turnd intoo froggs.'

I can't pile more misery onto DD2s wee shoulders so have spent last 45 mins cursing while trying to sew fecking badges on to horrible yellow uniform. Grrr

I bloody love sewing on Brownie badges. They are all done with the correct colour cotton AND I take them off and resew them when the gilets become full and they need jigging around a bit.

I am so keen I do it the night they get them so they can see them in the morning. Grin

Flobbadobs · 04/06/2013 14:46

threebee funnily enough no, it's a fairly small rectangular badge! The badges so far have pleased me as they have all been of normal shape. The bloody teddy shaped one she got from Rainbows almost had me in tears at the time but far they have all been a nice normal shape.
I colour co-ordinate my thread too... Grin

ThreeBeeOneGee · 04/06/2013 14:55

Why couldn't DD's have been a small rectangular badge? She did it last year and got one of these. It takes up the entire width of the extra wide sash.

CommanderShepard · 04/06/2013 15:36

threebee Commander Shepard is the lead character in the Mass Effect series of video games. She is my favourite gaming character ever my husband plays as manShep whose existence I will not acknowledge

Louise1956 · 04/06/2013 16:08

Not something I ever found that difficult. you really can't spare 45 minutes out of your life to do that? why not?

ThreeBeeOneGee · 04/06/2013 16:33

My mistake. I was thinking of Lieutenant Colonel John Sheppard. Wrong rank, wrong spelling!

debduck · 04/06/2013 16:35

I never knew that I didnt have to sew them on myself. I never knew that.

TheHerringScreams · 04/06/2013 16:46

I hate sewing on badges! None of my children have been to Brownies or Guides, but DS has just started Beavers (he's six in a week) and DD1 has been in Beavers, Cubs and is now in Sea Scouts. When she turned 9, I taught her to sow them off, watched carefully and occasionally mending a mistake and I am eternally happy as now she does it for herself. With a lot of moaning.

TheHerringScreams · 04/06/2013 16:46

Sorry, dd2.

EasyToEatTiger · 04/06/2013 16:58

Copydex is a well-known dressmakers' secret. The only thing about it is that IT DOES NOT COME OFF!!! It is fine in washing but will become stringy if clothes stuck together with it are dry cleaned. There is no antidote!

Dahlialover · 04/06/2013 17:00

They should sew their own brownie badges on. It is part of the experience. They should have badge sewing lessons and teach them properly.

I got red but OMFG I KNOW! I am still so pissed off with Bioware for that pile of bollocks.

but on the other hand the fanfic is smoking hot

prissyenglisharriviste · 05/06/2013 00:18

Wolfie, I used to run cubs as well. In fact we started a pack (and a beaver colony) as the village hadn't got them. And ds is in cubs still, so I'm well aware of the badge protocol. Grin

If you read correctly, I did say that mil does them at my house. Yes, they are a pita. But yes, your kids have worked immensely hard for them, and deserve that to be recognised.

Our guide unit has a placement chart for the badge sash. I's very particular. Grin

flakjacket · 05/06/2013 09:42

Our Guide unit does the badges and go-fo-its but don't issue the badges. I am far more upset about this than DD!

Phoebe47 · 05/06/2013 23:33

I think it is time that Brownies, Guides, Beavers, Scouts etc. moved into the real world and badges came as the iron on type. So much quicker than sewing and they stay on just as well if done properly. And as for "slipstitch" (whatever that is) I have more important things to do with my time. Iron on would definitely be better.

jynier · 05/06/2013 23:38

My DD2 was a Brownie; had an armful of badges! To my shame, there is still one in my workbox waiting to be sewn on ... DD2 will be 40 next year!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 05/06/2013 23:45

I don't mind the sewing, although the Brownie sash is challenging. But Why are the Rainbow / Brownie badges all so big? Scout ones are a much more reasonable size.

prissyenglisharriviste · 05/06/2013 23:46

Lol, phoebe, that 'real world' where your clothes come glued/ ironed together and not stitched? Grin even living in the land of goretex and taped sealed seams they are sewn first. With cotton and everything.

When the magic glue and iron replaces the stitches that hold your clothes together, you can guarantee that badges won't be hand sewn in the dark ages. Grin until that point, for the sake of not losing the ruddy things and leaving crappy white nasty residue that looks like someone ejaculated on your child's sash, sewing is pretty much the only way.

AudrinaAdare · 06/06/2013 00:22

"that looks like someone ejaculated on your child's sash"

Shock Grin

I have had to buy another house badge for DD's spare (cheap Tesco) blazer and it cost me two whole English pounds! Sewing it is. I don't want the Copydex effect.

P.S Asda do something on a cotton reel which looks like fine nylon twine. It isn't cotton the way I remember it, but my uneven stitches are almost invisible whether I'm sewing onto black or white. It's marvellous.
