To wonder why we bother with car insurance when it's almost impossible to claim :(

I scraped the car today along the back door and wing. It's not bad but its bad enough.

I own the car and insure it. I was planning to sell it in August and mum was going to put me on her insurance instead.

If I claim now, isn't it going to push mums premium up when she puts me on hers?

Claiming seems to be made so hard, if I claim. I not only loose my no-claims and pay the excess, I also have to pay a higher premium next time Sad

Ddubsgirl - what a nightmare Confused the same did happen to me some years ago when my car was broken into and they tried to steal it. It was written off, which was fine, but my premium skyrocketed, even though it was obviously not my fault at all.

They also set fire to neighbours car too :( both cars are a write off :( was very scary as it happened in middle of the night lucky next door heard something and looked out the window and saw the flames 2 other cars were parked with ours but were moved in time had no one had seen 3 tanks could have exploded

My XDH wrote my car off 18 months ago. I didn't lose my no claims bonus as I had it protected and my premium didn't go up either.

In fact it made no difference to anything and they gave me a really fair price for the car without issue so no complaints here.

The reason we have to bother with insurance by law is so that you can't drive into my car, damaging it entirely through your own fault, and then turn around and tell me that you can't afford to get my car repaired.

If you mean why do we bother with fully comprehensive insurance, then that is a better question, and you have to weigh up the costs of that type of cover against your likelihood of writing the car off.

A lot of the insurance is about personal injury to a third party tbh. If you crashed into someone else and they sued for personal injury costs this would come via your insurance. Depending on the severity of injuries those can run into hundreds of thousands.

It's a bugger if your premiums go up but I would probably look into having any scrape or ding (self inflicted involving no other cars) sorted out privately rather than through insurance.
