To think that "standee" is not a real word?

I was on the bus this morning and there was a notice saying that the capacity of bus was 48 passengers - 30 seated and 18 standees. Surely they've just made this up? Should I complain?

Oh no, I was wrong. I am devastated as will now have to stand down as spelling and grammar champion at work (sad but true - it's the only talent I possess).

Surely the issue is one of semantics rather than grammar? So either I am an annoying pedant and you can commence the throwing of delicious shopping at me, or you can be pleased that your title is safe.
