Travelling to Turkey?

I'm really worried about travelling to Turkey this summer. With all that's going on, should I cancel holiday plans?

I'm due to stay in Oludeniz...

Personally I wouldn't worry in the area you're going to. Turkey is a big country and I doubt very much that as tourists you'll even feel the protests. I'd also steer clear of southeast Turkey at the mo because of the Syria crisis but you'll be the on other side of the country.

Just be sensible, avoid large crowds if you do go into cities/towns and I'm sure you'll have a fab time. I love Turkey and we're also going there this summer (including to Istanbul). I'm really not that concerned.

We are going in summer to a coastal town. Will be watching the news but not too disturbed other than sad to see Turkish people feel they need to demonstrate as they are worried that their freedoms and democracy are possibly being eroded.

We are going. DH assures me it is fine, most of the coastal and tourist areas are unaffected by what is going on.

He tells me we only need to worry if the declare actual war on Syria.

He's normally the worrier of the family but understands politics and world affairs much more than I do.

My mum is already crying and is telling me she will end up on Valium if we go Hmm

And it'd be even sadder if tourists don't come because they don't feel it's safe :(

If there are real hostilities (I really hope not), the airlines usually allow you to cancel or rebook without penalty (although maybe not the budget ones, I'm not sure about them). We flew to Israel during the second Lebanon war in 2006 and BA was allowing passengers to do that even though there wasn't a blanket FCO warning.

Nsapls · 03/06/2013 00:58

That's reassuring! I'm such a worrier from flying to staying in a country that is unfamiliar to me. I guess I'll just keep watching the news.

Check the fco website.

Check that your travel insurance is comprehensive.

I have recently renewed mine (which is fairly cheap): it is explicitly stated in it though that I am not covered in case of natural disasters, civil unrest, etc.

Rattitude · 04/06/2013 00:04

And yes, check the FCO website!
